PLEASE don't tell me you're dropping that $$ on Apple's first batch attempt at using an Intel chip?! Confusedhock: Well, hey, glad people like you are out there so you can work out the bugs for the rest of us.

haha, so true..

my gripe with the 1st gen PB is the screen (little white lines appear), but supposedly Apple has outsourced Vaio people to help with fixing that Smile

No, I got a free laptop from work... 2.2GHz Pentium M, 1 gig ram, 80 gig hd, 1400x1050 display... so I can't justify a laptop at all now... but DAMMIT those things are perfect now. Software does need to catch up though.

It is not overpriced... first of all. Find a significantly cheaper PC laptop with those specs. I'm not a mac super fanboy, but those prices are right up there with other high end laptops. Yes, 2Gs is a lot, but it's appropriate for what you're getting. If you're not a mac fan, that's fine, but just calling it garbage is kinda silly

Second, if you "give not a shit" don't post Big Grin

I am

Its just that I grew up with them, we always had them at home and I like the ease of use and reliability.

And trust me, after working summers at my dad's office fixing and repairing Windows software and HP/IBM crap hardware....I couldn't take it anymore. The highlight of last summer was the time I was handed a hammer, some gloves, and a pair of goggles and told to destroy all the old PCs

Apple definitely is about a lot of hype but at the same time they design elegant and usable hardware and software, which is more than I can say for most of the computing industry.

The thing that is kinda dumb about this latest MacWorld is that they're claiming the new Intel core chips are 3x faster than the old G5's. But back when they were making the G5's they were saying "OMG they are s0 much faster than PC's!" So, at the heart of it, they were blowing smoke up everyone's ass.

Still, they have several advantages over Windows PC's so I can't really knock them.

People always complain about them being more expensive, but you have to factor in the fact that Mac's ship with some quality content creation software that would cost you a bit more to equip your Windows machine with.

Try getting a Windows laptop of the same weight, processing power, memory, and screen size & resolution as the Powerbook, then try to equip it with software that is equal to or better than iLife. After all that the prices are really not that bad.

Even then, realistically, most people don't need to spend $2k for a Powerbook because they're not going to be editing video at a place where they can't use a desktop.

And of course, if you really wanna pull the rug out from Apple you'd have to mention Linux PC's and the free software you can get to do a lot of things...but that's another discussion.

Oh yeah, I know a lot of people like Apple by default because they hate the Microsoft Evil Empire. I think that's misguided because I think Apple would be similarly evil (or more) if they had enough power...

I actually have the reverse experience. I had to deal with all the Macs in the art lab back when I was taking 3d animation classes. Never have I delt with such an unstable worthless pile of a computer/OS. Now I know OSX is drastically better....but even back then in the OS9 days people claimed how mac was so much more stable... so Im not believing the OSX hype either. If I wanted BSD Id install BSD on a cheap Intel box I built myself, not pay a ton of money for slow hardware runnign a BSD core and a shitty annoying gumdrop interface

This is the core of my dislike of apple, manipulative and deceptive marketing. Remember the whole "supercomputer on a chip" bullshit fiasco? Where they computed the theoretical maximum gflops based on altivec vector instructions and claimed that was how fast their chips were. Coupled with the stuff like an Intel P4 chip sitting on top of a snail. Now guess what they are using? Intel chips. How ironic.
It goes all the way back to the beginning too, from them trying to sue MS for copying their GUI, that they themselves copied from Xerox.

This is exactly why I think they can be and would be just as evil as Microsoft, given the opportunity.

Oh yeah the pre OSX versions couldn't compare with their Windows counterparts at the time IMO, I remember having lots of problems with OS 9 and older.

Basically, I use my computer for 3 simple tasks...internet, writing/presentations, and occasional audio work and editing. So OSX Tiger, which I have now, works fine for me and fits all my needs. I think it just depends on what you need your computer to do. Windows will always reign supreme in the office and workplace, and in the minds of gamers. I'm a huge Mac fan no doubt, but someday soon in my future I see myself owning a custom built blinged out Windows based gaming computer. The CS Source fan in me wants it bad

The choice of designers, developers, network engineers, system administrators, security analysts... etc.

I think that apple really works for three segments of the computer user market. The very beginner user or the user that has little to no desire for games and just wants an easy interface to do the typical computer stuff (word process, presentations, email, web, photos). AND Real power users who appreciate a stable environment which looks great and you can get under in a hurry if you need to. The serious sysadmins that I've worked with are all on *nix and a good portion just buy a mac to kill two birds in one stone (desktop/workstation). Sorry, linux sucks as a desktop OS... even Ubuntu. Sorry, windows sucks for anything sysadmin related. AND of course graphic design professionals use it. I don't need to explain that.

The new intel Yonah processor is not slow at all... and powermac G5s are still quite quick. But I understand where you're coming from...

you're joking, right? maybe you're making those broad statements based on one or two you know, but i promise you are wrong. artists, editors, and design persons are the only professionals who prefer apples as a whole.
