Surprise Surprise,
No one makes a trailer hitch for my MR2. A shop that use to sell them only sells the plans for one for 15 bucks. Apparently I can just bring the drawings to a metal shop and have them fab a hitch for me. So I have two questions:
Is this a good idea?
Got suggestions as to where I should go?
Two feet.
It's a fine idea if that's really the only way you can get it!
In Harrisonburg, check out Krider Machine Shop and possible Shickle Machine Shop.

hitches are pretty basic for Type I stuff. Just get a few pieces of steel and bolt them to the bumper supports or have one custom made like they said, nothing special about the small stuff.
I went through this when I got mine. I found one through draw tite and ordered the one for a 2 dr civic (or hatch I forget) and it didn't work on the del sol. then I went to a trailer place and asked him about a custom one. he found me one through rigid hitch, but I looked and didn't see one for the MR2. I'd just visit a couple places in town and see what they recommend.

Bringing this one back from the dead cause I can't find a damn place in NoVA that will do it for under 300+.
Anyone have any suggestions?

So I guess you aren't getting the trailer before summit?
It looks like Da'Lan makes a hitch for your car, also looks like it is $250

Send me the plans and I'll see how much the steel would cost.
Well crap. I was looking at buying that one but the only ones I saw were asking for 350. Another down side is that it tucks up above the muffler.
