VIR October 22-23

Who's going? I know Chad, Pete and I (you're getting the car fixed in time, RIGHT PETE?!) are. Should be some good track time for the HPDE1 kids like me to work on their braking zones (got my Panther XP8 pads yesterday!) and other techniques. Not to mention the bling banquet 8)

South bend got me once. Fortunately I got away with a bunch of grass stuffed under the car and a dinged muffler.

no amount of footage can prepare you as well as in-car instruction, but that's his car and his choice.

From what I gathered talking to John this weekend, he seems like a guy that's got it together and would never go nuts on track especially a track that's brand new to him.

Good luck everyone. Wish I could go to VIR but that no in-car instruction worries me.

I dont discount John's ability or driving at all - its just that the track has some places that will bite you real quickly, and if you dont have a few events there already with an instructor you just wont see it coming. You will also learn the track a lot faster with someone in the passenger seat, IMO - I did this at RA and RRR earlier this year and it worked out great.

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys! :? Seriously, I'll take the words of caution... seriously.

The first session is going to be a throwaway anyway since I have to bed the new pads... carbotech recommends 50-60% braking for a couple laps (read: SLOW) and then one heavy lap, then pit. Should be a good opportunity to work on the line a little bit without going nuts.

Yeah dude bed in your pads before you get to the track so you don't waste a session.

As far as instruction, as long as you don't bite off big chunks of speed you'll be all right. VIR is probably the safest track we run at anyway.

They recommend you bed them on the street first, doing the 60-30 a few times and then 60-0 a few times, then on your first track session too, with the instructions I mentioned above... I'll definately do some street bedding first. Personally I'd never heard that you had to bed them "twice", but I guess they know what they're talking about.

probably bedding them twice just because they are new.

i was gonna comment on that but it looks like evan beat me to it. however, you also have to admit that your incident was in the wet on corded azenis. AND they were corded when i saw them at an autox like 8 months earlier.

Well compare VIR to SP Main, SP Shenandoah, Mid Ohio, Road Atlanta, and Beaverun and my vote would be for VIR being the safest. You can still hit something at VIR but over the years I've certainly seen a lot less wrecks at VIR than at SP. The only exception to that has been rain.
