I'm working on a new problem tonight..stuck so far

a graph wiht n vertices has distinct degress(how many lines come out of the dots) except for one degree, say x, which occurs twice. Find x and prove your result

I'm pretty sure for n odd, x = (n-1)/2
and for n even, x = n/2

well, this is graph theory..which SHOULD be required for all CS majors. Lots of algorithms can be graphed, or shown in relation to a type of graph, etc

Yeah but is it useful in real world scenarios, i.e. the ones where the software is being made (i.e. $$) ?

I cant see something like this being done in place of all the other things that have to happen. Too many wasted hours.

I just dont see the value in saying all CS majors should learn something that doesnt have any real world application value at all.

Maybe Evan and Mike can add more to this than I can.

What are you talking about?

i have used 0 high-level math in the past year and a half... i suppose if you go to work constructiing like real world modeling type shit, yeah, but chances are you'll never use it again Smile

math is like a foreign language to me. i think i pulled off a C in math 103 my sophomore year, haha. and thanks to Jay i managed to get my grade up to a D in analytical methods my sen. year. anybody else out there think they suck as bad as me?

oh I do! jeez... lets see, I had math 155 freshman year- which is college algebra- managed a D. Then took Math 205- calc and got a D as well. Both with the same prof. I just suck!
