I dont know about 50k right out of school..... unless you already have a clearance or some serious connections.

some of the bigger consulting agencies started some people off in the mid 50s - no clearance or serious connections. I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's not that far of a stretch.

Those jobs are tough to get, and you really need to have your shit together and already have an "in" with the company.

Not saying it cant be done - but coming from JMU with an ISAT degree, well good luck is all I can say. Coming from UVA with a econ or business degree and a little help, sure you can swing that.

In retrospect, I should have done Bus or CIS.... getting a job out of school would have been much better.

what types of jobs are you isat guys working at now, and what was your concentration?
I mean I don't think I could have chosen a better match for me in terms of a major. I enjoyed the classes and the content, and learned alot with the major I chose. Although a CS, EIS, or CIS would have pulled more money, they were not something I was especially interested in.

Most of the time, what you learn in school is not directly applied to your job. The skills you learn can be applied anywhere.

I was a manufacturing/engineering concentration with a materials science major...

I now work as a systems analyst/consultant for a software company Wink

Not ISAT, but the same building. I was CS - came out of school with a full clearance (thanks to a gov't internship), went to work for Booz Allen Hamilton as an Information Systems Security Engineer (ISSE). Now I'm a Software Engineer / Systems Administrator / Raging Alcoholic with SAIC here in Charlottesville.

Clearance + B00z = bling salary Tongue

i need a clearance, but it doesn't seem anyone gives them. everybody expects you to have one already, but how does that happen if nobody will hire you for a secure job without it and aggggghhhh i'm rambling!

you all know what i mean Tongue

Seriously, who would want to do that!

i have to admit, i think the clearance is one of the shoe-in's. I have a Full-Secret that was issued by state also from a gov't internship. If you happen to have a TS/SCI clearance then you're pretty much guaranteed to work at a decent place for a good amount of money.

I also think that i should've started with a COB major in finance/accounting or a GIS/IKM/E&M concentration with ISAT. I only have an IKM - ISAT major but i've relied on common business practices and government/consultant experience for the job i have now.

Rob, you did something in environmental science right? I would think the New Orleans thing would help you score a job. Check with the big engineering firms that have FEMA contracts. I'm sure they need people.

Yes, I was definitely thinking about that as I saw it unfold. I have applied with HydroGeoLogic which if you look in the Times Business section is doing a lot of work there. I applied for an Environmental Scientist job, and asked for $40,000 and they said they had nothing available at that pay. So I reconsidered at $35,000. Haven't gotten an interview with them yet though.

Note: I have not been offered anything yet, it was just the interviews that went well. CSC has yet to get back, and ECC is probably gonna take another week to call.

Yeah that would of made you very well rounded. Yeah I don't care for business, finance, or accounting but it is so pertinent in this day and age. I didn't want to walk from ISAT to Showker either.

shit, isat from showker was a breeze, lol. I remember when i had to go from Jackson to isat....that was a bitch. 15 minutes to get across campus isn't impossible, but you can't leave late. I kinda liked showker as a building though, gecon and gbus were the only classes i had in there.

Back in my day... I had to make the ISAT -> Music Building trip twice a day, and sometimes on to Anthony Seeger. This after walking from Old Mill in the morning, uphill both directions through snow drifts.

rob, definitely get in touch with fema. i know they're hiring, but be prepared for 7 day work weeks right now...
