Well, I bought a new laptop today. An Acer Aspire 5002WLMi.
Picked it up for about 1000 bucks after rebate, with an enormous no-interest-financing deal.
AMD Turion 64 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR, 100GB hard drive, a 15 inch widescreen display and a DVD burner. Sadly, there is no firewire port, but as I don't have a camcorder with FW anyway, and that's practically the only thing you use a FW port for, it's no big loss.
This screen is ginormous. Positively huge. It's got alot of lights and buttons whose functions aren't immediately apparent, but the touchpad has a nice directional scrolling button I like very much.

It's upgradeable to 2GB, which I will probably do, just to say that I have it. The odd thing is that with this much hard drive space, memory, and the DVD burner, the lack of a firewire is pretty glaring. I, personally won't immediately miss it, and a firewire PCMCIA card isn't all that expensive it's just a little odd. It also has seperate Ôé¼ and $ keys which I find really odd. They aren't multifunction, they're just there, on either side of the "up" key.

Yeah the computer I used in Germany had a Ôé¼ but you had to press Alt Gr to access it. But yeah that is wierd that they have their own separate keys.

Sounds alot like my laptop (Compaq presario R3000). I've also got a gig of RAM (VT Engineering requires it). I think my hard drive is a 60 though. It's got a 64 bit amd athlon processor. I also have the 15 inch widescreen. The one thing I don't like about it is that its a little heavy, which is an issue when I have to take it with me to my engineering classes. Mine also has firewire, built in wireless, pcmcia port, and build in ports for SD, MS/pro, MMC, and SM.
bling bling, it needs an MM sticker.

looks like a good pick up. personally, i wouldn't waste the money on another gig of ram... 1gb is more than enough for current apps, but then again a few years ago people were saying the same about 512.
as far as y'all thinking 100gb is huge? pish posh. i have more than that in mp3s and porn alone mikey just tossed in a 300gb to compliment his 80gb last week

lol, with all the CAD software you'll be using you'll actually need it.
I only got 512MB for my desktop a while ago due to budget constraints and that'll do fine since i don't do much gaming or heavy processing of any sort. My laptop only has 256MB with 64MB shared RAM for the video card....rough. It can handle its own as long as it has the latest virus updates and if i run adaware and defrag is every few months. I need to reformat it though. 2GB is not really worth it unless you've got extra $bling$ to spend though, or if you are REALLY into gaming or if you run demanding applications. Eventually it'll be necessary, but i don't feel like it's practical yet.
I don't think it's that 100GB is huge in general, but it's pretty notable for a laptop! Wonder what speed that HD is?

I read at one place it's a 4200rpm. Not for sure on that. Not the kind of thing most computer manufacturers advertise.
