damn, those jumps were Xbox huge. and that WRX got tossed when he jumped without his huge wing on stage 8 or 9. Some jumps up to 50 meters.
Tere were tough stages, good job to the top finishers for enduring all the pounding their cars were taking.

Yeah man he very nearly went into an end-over-end on that one. For those that didn't see, Petter Solberg hit a tree and it knocked his trunk off (thus leaving him wingless). The next big jump he went over the car pitched wildy forward without its rear downforce and damned near flipped  hock:

wow, i didn't realize those wings made that much downforce, i thought they were more for lateral stability.
i love these two events, finland and germany are my favorite mix of terrain.

interesting about petter. The weight distribution on the Impreza is such that it should pitch back, even without downforce. I wonder if he just hit the yump wrong....
Well you gotta think, he's got a nice front splitter to provide downforce in the front, which is usually balanced by the wing in the back...

the splitter only really works when its close to the ground.
and a big purpose of the rear wing is to smooth the laminar flow and reduce drag. its less an instrument of downforce than you think, especially in a rallycar that spends half its time sideways.
i could be wrong of course, i just dont see the lack of a wing in the back to create that situation

depends on shock valving and spring rates too....alot of off road trucks valve the front shocks very stiff to keep the front end from plunging into the face of a jump (helping jump attitude), and for handling reasons as well of course
oh yeah, i say it will be a year or less until somebody tries to strap the suby-style wing with all the vertical slats on the back of their civic, home-made or not :lol:

A parabolic trajectory wont cause it to change the pitch. If the cg is in the middle and ignoring air restistance I'm pretty sure it will maintain the same pitch it had when it left the ground.

That's good point about the splitter, totally forgot about that.
But still, it couldn't have been a coincidence that Petter knocked off his wing then on the next big jump he nose dived.
Also on the downforce and the cars going sideways, that's why they have those vertical strakes on the wings now. I think I read that in Rally XS or something.

very true, and a data point Im not ignoring. Probably not a coincidence, which is why Im a bit confused. Everything Ive read and seen about the impreza suggests otherwise. Even the Grp N WRXes with no wing would pitch slightly up when jumping

evo MR's have them as well on the roof next to the rear glass. they're diffusers which straighten out the air flow to cause less turbulence and less drag

Racecar Engineering had an article about the effect of end plates on the air flow on the rear wings of F1 cars. Basically it was saying that the end plate prevents vortex formation close to the wing. Vortices apparently increase drag and reduce downforce when they disrupt the flow on the wing.
I suppose that really doesn't add anything, we need an Aerospace Engineer on this forum.

i do have a wind tunnel. i dont think you want to do any testing on it though. your car wont be very clean afterwards
