Can any honda guys make sense of this?

This is an excerpt from an email. It's from a family friend.

It's a Honda Civic '92, 101K miles and looks new.

It stalls without warning 40, 50, 60mph, though the radio, lights and windows work. Three ignitors have been installed in the car in 5 months. The last 2 by the Honda dealer where it is now. In Dec I had the timing belt replaced, distributor O rings, electric fuel pump and ignitor.

They are talking w/Honda corporate who thinks it's electrical. One mechanic said it could be the computer, or electric fuel pump but that was replaced in Dec. ?

I don't want the car back. I think it's a deathtrap. However I can't afford another. For all I know I don't have a car any longer, bec this one may be too expensive to repair. It's really crummy.

Let me know if you have any ideas about it.

what is the ignitor? dizzy/plugs/wires? check fuel injectors? could be the ecu i guess, but that isn't much to go on :?

Does the Civic have a crank position sensor? When the SHO's CPS starts to go bad the engine will die without warning and then not want to restart - usually you have to wait until the engine cools down. Once the engine cools the car will start without a problem......

I believe OBD-I (92-95) honda's did not come with the Crank Flux sensor or whatever its called..

hey man it happens. make sure the gas cap is on tight too, or the dragon spirit will leak out.

Sounds like an ignition coil - does this only happen when its hot? There's a chance it could also be a main relay. I've got a helms in .pdf here if you want a copy.

Things like the coil, ignitor, and main relay will only surface (at first) when they're hot - not sure why that is.... engine will die, cut out or just not refire after turning it off. Let it sit for a while and it will run again. That generally means the end of the road for the component.... diagnostic test tells the whole story though. I hope jack-o can use a voltmeter

From what i've read and experienced, the two most common problems that cause the car to shut down is going to be the igniter or the main relay. I had a similar problem but once i got another main relay, problem was solved. check out h-t board. they talk about it all the time.
