so with this new 240, i'm trying to figure out if its got a limited slip diff. with the rear end off the ground, i can spin one wheel and the wheel on the other side spins, but in the opposite direction. i thought that diffs would make the wheel spin in the same direction. also, i thought an open diff would make only one wheel spin. so whats goin on with this situation?

it's working correctly if the other wheel spins the opp. direction. its difficult for me to explain but basically a differential has a planetary gear in the middle that a series of spider gears rotate around. somebody help me out here.

put a wheel on asphalt and the drive wheel in the grass or gravel. floor it and if you take off, you have lsd
Dave Wrote:u have lsd
eh? I thought if it went the other way, it was an open diff. At least, all the open diff bimmers I've had (hell, I've NEVER had an LSD in any car ) the wheel went the other way....
the integra has an open diff and one wheel stays still while the other spins.

4 lug non SE? Im pretty sure you do not have an LSD.
IIRC most of the S14s that had LSDs were the SE model (with 5 lug wheels)
With an open diff or torsen diff, the other wheel spins the opposite way. With a clutch diff or jellybox, the wheels rotate the same way. Although thats off the top of my head so feel free to correct me if im wrong
You probably do not have an LSD.
If you have an S13 (like Daves, my old one, and Blairs) then the only way you have an LSD is if it's a twin cam (91-92) SE hatchback with four wheel steering (SUPERHICAS). If it's not, then you don't.
On an S14, you must have ABS to have an LSD. It was an option on non-se's and standard on most SE's. I think. But if you have an S14, you can check on the placard under the hood. Look at the model number (18 digits, not the VIN) and:
For Feb '94 - July '95: A, C, or E, = LSD
F, or "-" = NO LSD
For July '95 - July '96: A, C, or F = LSD
B, D, or "-" = NO LSD
The easiest way to tell is the big fat orange sticker on the side of the LSD, which will tell you if it is an LSD or not. But if all these fail and you're still not convinced, the mechanical way is as follows:
Lift car off ground.
With transmission in neutral, spin one wheel by hand and the other spins the same direction. Both wheels spin very freely.
With transmission in gear (driveshaft fixed), the wheel is much more difficult to spin, plus the other wheel rotates in the OPPOSITE direction.
With one wheel fixed (someone holding it in this case, could also be on the ground), either in neutral or in gear, it is very difficult to turn the other side at all, but it will turn given enough force.
There's no sense talking about what torsens or clutch packs because there's no factory clutchpack or torsen (only viscous) and if there were an aftermarket diff I'd think the seller would know it.
The truth is that S chassis didn't often have LSD's, and so as a result most don't.
So you say you want an LSD, Maeng? It's pretty simple. You have 4 options.
1. Buy an aftermarket. Quaife and Kaaz both make diffs for the 240, but for the Quaife you'll have to buy the 300ZX NA diff. It's the same.
2. Find a car with an LSD and buy the LSD stuff. Not likely to happen and it will probably be beat up.
3. Get a 300ZX NA diff. You'll need to source VLSD halfshafts with this option. The 300ZX are a 5-bolt pattern, your 240 is a 3 pairs of two bolts.
4. Buy a differential from a 95+ Infiniti J30. They all had LSD's, so there's no getting an open diff by accident, they were less likely to be abused, they're cheap, and they have the proper 3 pair of two bolt output shaft pattern. Just make sure you get one post 95. If you have an S14, it'll bolt in no sweat, if you have an S13, you have to swap the diff cover, which is a peice of cake just make sure you get all of the old gasket material off and buy a new gasket.
I think I covered everything I wanted to cover there.

I don't know what I'm talking about.

not sure when it was made or which digit in the model no. i'm supposed to look for. if its the last digit, then mine ends in "-"

with tranny in neutral, only one wheel spins. the other does not. with tranny in gear, one wheel spins, the other spins the opposite direction.

you have an open diff. But that's ok, as I said, installing an LSD is pretty easy. I can help you source a J30 diff, as I think that's the best option. The gearing is slightly different, but I promise you won't notice, especially after you launch like a scalded cat in comparison to your open diff.
Now, do you have an S13 or an S14? (old style like dave and my old one (89-93) or "new" style, (95-98))

S14 (1996), bung bung bitches. the body is in rough shape, but mechanically, its sound. there's lots of shit i gotta do to it though, so we'll see soon.

Lemme know if you need any help. 5 lug swaps are mad easy on S14's.

i need to sell the integra first. then i will keep it mostly stock so i can turn around and sell it and get the fag car. i will probably track it once or twice though just to try her out.
