Transmission Question
#1
The transmission in my e30 is starting to act weird. Just in the past few weeks my tranny is grinding in my fourth gear. Now it doesn't just grind right when I put it into gear as if the synchronizers are bad. It grinds after I've shifted and I release the clutch. So I've been searching around for answers and some techs have told me its the synchronizers and others mention that it could be something wrong with the linkages in my shifter. I feel like it could be the latter because when I shift into fourth, it feels as if it hasn't gone in all the way (it doesn't have two small notches from neutral to the gear like all others).

What do you guys think could be the problem?

i would think it's the linkages. sounds like it's only going halfway into gear, then when you let the clutch out the gear is popping out and grinding against the teeth of the gear its supposed to be engaged with.

is there any way you can look at the linkages without dropping the engine or tranny? i know on Jay's A2 dub, we can actually see the linkages for the tranny and were able to look at the slop in the shifting arms/mechanisms. in Jay's case, it looks like either new parts are needed, or at least new bushings.

On the E30 its on the end of the tranny, which involves dropping the exhaust and driveshaft - so have fun with that Wink

Yeah, that's what I didn't want to have to do. Well hopefully this will solve my little problem. I'm ordering the parts soon and I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks for your help.

I dunno, I'm doubting it's the linkage. When you pull it in to 4th, it pushes the selector rod forward. Even if the bushings are shot, it should still shift fine, but just be sloppy. More than one gear would be shitty too.

If you're gonna replace it either way, make sure you get the spacer rings and circlips, as it's easy to lose/break them. It's a good time to get a new shift lever too, which are like $40 IIRC. I'm a fan of the Z3 1.9. Shorter, but not notchy.

Try double clutching into 4th to see if that helps.

I think I'm going to replace some of the linkage stuff anyways, just to return it back to a more original feeling. Also, I was planning on getting the 2.5 Z4 shift lever. I think the 3.0 will be too notchy, but I've heard that the Z3 isn't much different from stock.

Most likely it is my synchronizers, but I'm just in denial that I will have to get a new transmission. Oh, and double clutching does work some of the times but I can't stand the feeling of grinding gears, so I just skip 4th :? . Do you know where to get used transmissions that are in good shape?

Well the transmission is now making some interesting noises. :x So, I've decided to just get a new transmission. I have recieved a few offers for used transmissions off of some forums that don't seem too bad. However, a lot of them either have high mileage or no known mileage at all. Everyone on the forums say that these trannies (Getrag 260) are solid and never go bad unless they get low on fluid. Guess how mine was destroyed (I'm a neglegent ass)?

Anyways, does anyone know anything about e30 trannies? What mileage is good, prices for a used one, and what I should look for?

Well, I'm sure Channing now has his pick of dozens of E30 transmissions. Maybe he can hook something up for you?

for an '85 e? For $300, go down to Radford and pick up an entire e car I've been trying to get rid of. ~158XXX miles on it, and the tranny showed no signs of problems at all when I drove it around 2 years ago. And what you're being told is correct, the trans is pretty strong, should outlast the car if taken care of even somewhat. Part it out and make some $$ on ebay for a summer project. 8)

Please take it so I can reduce my stock to 22 cars.

I may have to take you up on that offer. I'd love to go down to Radford to take a look at it if its ok. Where is it located down there?
