I wasn't planning on it but I think I might buy this red MR2 I saw yesterday. I was actually looking for 240's but I had a blast driving the mr2. it only has 130bhps but it felt really fast, really strong and the steering was really good. What do you guys know about these cars? Esp. the market value. Edmunds.com tags the true market value at 2,800 for a car w/118,000miles. The lady is asking 5k. Am I missing something?

There is a HUUUUUUUGE markup on those cars. MR2s are worth their weight in gold. RX7s are almost there
 but either way, that's WAYYY too much for an NA mr2. Maybe 3500.PS. What year? There were some major issues fixed with 93+

it's a 92. suspension was redone in 93, what else? Yeah yeah, it's missing a turbo, but frankly, from what I've read, inexperienced drivers racing turbos is tantamount to signing one's own death sentence. I was driving it hard and it oversteers, which I'm not use to, and it corrects really quickly. Long story short, the NA feels like a better fit for my lack of experience. The car needs new brakes and rear tires and apparently, toyota didn't use clear cloats on red, black or white colored MR2's, so the paint isn't all that great.

5k The lady is out of her bloody mind. If you really want a MR2, we'll find you one for cheap. And 5k ain't cheap.

tell her that 5k is entirely too much for that car, especially a 92. Counteroffer with 3200. Explain that blue book is 2800 and there is a markup for the car, but then pinpoint everything that is wrong. Explain that you will have to put $400 in brakes (I'm sure we could show a way for pads and rotors+labor is 400) and another $300 in tires. Not to mention the shitty paint, which will cost another $1000 to remedy if done right. Suddenly its a $5000, you're saving her all the trouble (cuz it'll cost you a whole 200 to do it unless you really want a paint job, and you drive away with an MR2. Go over it with a fine-tooth comb and find EVERYTHING that is wrong with it. Also point out that at 118k, you will also probably be replacing timing belt, clutch, shocks, and other stuff in the near future. Does she have service records? If not, get her on that too. You should be able to drive the price down considerably.
In 93 the suspension was revised b/c too many people thought they were driving commuter cars and the car though it was a racekar. If I remember correctly, they softened the car up a little bit to make it more friendly to the American public (read: lame-ass drivers). If you really want to bust her balls (hah), point out what you want to buy it for and that you're going to have to drop another couple grand to update the suspension b/c there was an inherent flaw in the car from the factory.

I wouldnt even touch it for 3200.
Let her sit on it for 3 or 4 weeks, then start tossing lowballs.

I know there's a bunch of things wrong with the car and they're all legimate. The front pads are shot and chewed into the rotors which I can clearly show and the two back tires won't last the summer. I'll point these things out to her but I don't know if I can bust her balls.

iirc, the transmissions are also different between 93 and <93. That could be on the turbos only.... hmm... those are the only ones I paid attention to when I was looking.
 Andy, for real though, there are better mr2s for cheaper and better mr2s for the same price...this

Went to go pick up the MR2 this afternoon and the freakin lady lost the keys to the car and she left the title inside so she can't get a key made from Toyota and since it was Sunday, no locksmiths wanted to come out for nonemergency blah blah blah. So. here I am without a damn car.
