So I think I flooded the motor on the 280Z. I'm not sure completely what causes this but sometimes when shifting the motor will just shut off. I dont know if it is missing gears or what, It happened this time while downshifting to slow down. Maybe came off clutch too fast? Anyways I tried getting some people to push it while it was in gear and I was cranking the starter but it didnt work. The first time it did this i started it and clutched it slowly into gear and that got it rolling. Any ideas or advice? I read somewhere that a lot of stuff can happen like the spark plugs getting and stuff so should I pull the plugs or is there an easier way?

pulling the plugs will determine if you've flooded it. if they are wet, it's flooded.
don't know exactly why it would flood while shifting though. it's carburetor right? i might be 33, but i no nothing of carbs.

its fuel injected, but its 27 year old fuel injection hehe, i dont have a friggin plug set for this car yet. Will it evaporate if I leave it alone long enough?

should.
you could have a leaky injector then. i've only heard about it, never had the problem that i know of. but that could cause fuel to be going in when you're not really on the gas.

There's an easy solution to this......
Carbs!

i took off the oil cap and pulled the dipstick and im gonna let it sit overnight and hopefully the gas will evaporate
I'm not sure what evidence leads you to believe that you flooded the engine, I just didn't think that was possible with fuel injection, old or not. And it's definatly not going to happen just because you let off the gas or clutch a certian way when the engine is running. There's just no way (please correct me if I'm wrong here) that the injectors could spray that much excess fuel and not have it burn. I'd be more likely to blame a weak ignition system. There's many other things that could cause what you described as well. If it starts in the morning, that could just mean the problem is worse when everything's warmed up.

Push starting = rolling the car in gear then dumping the clutch.
Did the starter not kick out? How old is the Z? Has it been sitting? Did you just buy this car? If you confirm it's a fuel issue, check to see if you can hear the fuel pump go off. Also check inside the tank itself. When a friend of mine was restoring his 280z turbo, the gas was so rusted that it clogged his pump, his filter and his lines.

why 3rd? works fine in 1st AND reverse

yeah, i've push started in gears other than 3rd as well, and I know we had to reverse push Sean's pile at Summit last year.
i reverse started my pile down my driveway yesterday just for shits and giggles i'm guessing he says 3rd because it is as close to a 1:1 ratio as you're going to get.

1st is really hard on your clutch and drivetrain when you are pushstarting.
Your engine isn't flooding, you have some other problem.
I feel more like i do now than I did before.

I'd be willing to guess that it's not nearly as hard on the drivetrain as launching a car. Or curb-hopping. Or even shifting hard. Please fill me in if you have reason to believe otherwise!
I'm surprised to hear you guys say 3rd, I've never tried that one, you'd really have to get rolling fast, no? With space and manpower limitations, I'm usually first or 2nd. Haven't tried reverse!
but yeah, 2nd that, you have some other problem. Speaking of which, did it start the next day or what?
Pushstarting a car in first is JUST LIKE trying to launch a car in 5th gear....think about it

thinking.... not registering.... if the clutch is engaged how can it be hard on it?

Krush Wrote:Pushstarting a car in first is JUST LIKE trying to launch a car in 5th gear....think about it Yeah, kinda... Either way, I've had to jump start a many a car in 3rd world countries and I've been tought to let it out slowly in 3rd and push the clutch back in as soon as it starts (as not to bog the engine if it's being pushed slowly). I would think push starting in 1st would be like engine braking in 1st... without the revmatch. Double eww....
I always push start in 1st. Never had a problem... many push starts

Pushstarting in 1st is harder because the wheels are trying to turn the engine over (rather then engine turning wheels). Bascailly, the wheels are spinning slow, and you are trying to make the engine spin really fast. (because everything is bascially in revers, you are gearing up the power transmitted to the engine from the wheels).
I've seen a car with a weak clutch just slip the clutch when push starting in 1st. When doing it from 4th or 5th, there was no problem.
Does this make sense yet?
I feel more like i do now than I did before.
I suppose it all makes sense but I've never had a problem with 1st gear. Push it to about 8mph and side step the clutch...
