Learn me on the PS2...
#1
Got lots of gift cards for my birthday, so I'm headed to Worst Buy this afternoon - will, at a minimum, be picking up a PS2 and GT4. What else do I need to get? I've got an HDTV (widescreen 30", 1080i) and 5.1 setup (well, getting there...), so is there anything else I need in order to take advantage of that? Memory cards - how much capacity do I need? Extra controllers - Dualshocks or something different?

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to consoles, so learn me good!

1 memory card, probably want 2 controllers (it might come with 2, but probably only 1). i really love my logitech wireless controller, the batteries last forever. might want to get an s-video cord too.

That pretty much covers it, memory card, a 2nd controller (because typically only 1 comes in the box), s-video cable. If you're getting the slim version you don't need a network adapter, but if you're getting the original version you might want to pick up the adapter for playing online eventually.

Dont get the s-video cable if you have HD.
Get the component cables, they will let you use HD mode in GT4

if you dont have an extra optical cable, you should pick one up for the sound, but there are much better places than BB to get one of those

Thanks gents - I just got back from the store. Picked up the PS2, GT4, a 16mb memory card, component video cables, and a Logitech wireless controller. Spent a grand total of about $50 of my money in addition to all the gift cards/etc, so life is good 8)

Good call on the optical cable Evan - I've actually got an extra at home that I'll use.

The lady at checkout said something about a "trade-up" plan - if you buy the Bestbuy protection plan then in a year when the PS3 comes out you can trade your old PS2 and get some kind of credit towards the new machine. It sounded like a dirty trick to me - and anyways my automatic service plan rejection program kicked in - so I said "hell no". Has anyone else heard of such a thing? I've got like 30 days to change my mind on that - but I've gotta believe that theres a horrible catch - I've never known Bestbuy to actually do something that would *save* customers any money.

sounds too good to be true. why would they want a ton of used ps2s? granted, they started selling used games, but i would think they aren't going to give you as much credit as you could get elsewhere (ebay, game store, etc).

They did this when the slim PS2 came out actually, you could trade up to the slim from the original. I'd actually consider it depending on the cost.

i really dislike the wheel. it makes a ton of noise and imo is difficult to drive with. unlike a normal wheel it doesn't center itself very quickly and isn't accurate at low speeds. the one time i used it i quickly grew tired of frantically spinning the wheel back to center and doing like 3 turns to lock to go around a corner at 20mph.

yup, 2nd the vote against wheels. I tried 6 different ones? Yeah, maybe 6. One was semi-fun, the rest were laughable, if they weren't DOA. Maybe they would be ok for someone who had never driven a car before. The one I liked was the Ferrari 360 wheel, but even it lead to slower lap times, not to mention tired arms, so f*ck that!

Congrats on joining the PS2 party like 5 years late.

I also acquired a PS2 and GT4 over the weekend. Went home and hooked it up to our 62" widescreen hdtv and it almost feels like your in the car.

aight, check around, there's a place online where you can grab a swap disc set for about 25-30 dollars (i think), just one thing you have to do inside the ps2, and you can basically get all the games you want, depending on if you have the iso file and a DVD to burn it on. small games can fit on cd.

i can do the work if you want to. and i'll see if i can get some games that you may want, just throw me a list.

this is probably the cheapest way to mod your ps2.

the ps2 is a computer. maybe a lot simpler and complex in different ways, but nonetheless, a computer. It is possible to crack, bypass, change certain parts, to make it respond how you want. The swap disc set, basically tricks the flip top into thinking it is always closed. (this is done by joining the flip-top reader points on the motherboard with a small cap) The swap disc, when read make s the ps2 boot up a certain way. it then is taken out, and any game, wheter it be US, JAP, EUR, or burned back-up, can be read and played normally.

you could also do mod chips, which bypass the regional encoder and validation reader, and step that up to a hard drive in the expansion bay. The hard drive will hold the games themselves, thus reducing the need for discs. Also, the boot program used to load the games off the hard drives, can install games onto the hard drive. So your friends copy of a game can be on your hard drive, and voila, two copies.

i know this, but did he mention wanting to open up his brand new ps2, mod it, and void the warranty in doing so?

Myuki - thanks for the info. Frankly, I don't have the time to mess around with it at the moment. I'm content to play GT4 in 10 minute spurts... I'll let you know if it comes time to mod the thing though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think the slimline could hold a harddrive (internally at least).
