2 Big New Sports Car Announcements

Here comes the 3rd gen Miata!

Autoweek story

It will be powered by a 160 hp 2.0L and will come with a 6 spd manual or automatic transmission. Supposedly it is significantly stiffer but has only gained 22 lbs (still a lot heavier than it should be imo). Its official unveiling will be at the Geneva Auto Show next month.

Porsche will be releasing a new sports car called the Cayman S. It is a midengined 2-seater that will fit between the Boxster and 911 Carrera

I think it looks hot. I believe this body style could help the miata lose the "chick car" stereotype everyone gives them.

hmmm... the Cayman S doesn't sound much greater than the new boxster S... guess I'd need to read more, but it seems to me the price range between the top of the line boxster S and a base 911 isn't that much. I'm really excited to see another model of my favorite make, and mid engine rules.

I've never thought of the boxster as an impractical sports car- its very easy for daily driving and has 2 relatively large trunks- enough for a weekend trip for 2. On the other hand, a hard top mid engine car would be perfect for the track... (Dad, time to trade in! j/k- prob way too expensive)

I was really hoping the 3rd gen would go with an aluminum frame to get the weight back to ~2100, and replace the iron block engine with an aluminum to drop some more weight.

I do really like the styling, more of a return to the original styling, with some muscle.
Only thing I would complain about is the slight z4 resemblance and hideous taillights

It depends on the weight. With about 300 hp if it weighs less than 3000 lbs its going to be pretty goddamned fast. It probably still won't beat the Vette on the performance/$ equation but it'll probably be pretty close and most likely it will be a much better all around car.

rumor is that the 997 will be the last rear engined p-car, and they will transition to an all mid-motor.

i wouldn't jump on the miata for increased weight quite yet. it's still a light car by all means and i'm sure mazda engineers wouldn't let one of their most important models become a sloppy handler.

people just expect more equipment in their purchase nowadays. every car is supposed to have a nav system, dual zone climate control, 23 airbags, parking radar, and rain sensing wipers  it sucks that its making our favorite cars fat, but at least a few models out there stay true to the lightweight formula (elise)

i'm excited about this new porsche too. will it be competing directly with the vette then, or is it supposed to be going after high hp mid engined cars like the soon-to-be lotus espirit-remake?

I was making fun of the hatch. But in a way, I guess I was making fun of Maeng's mom too?
