Is the Mazdaspeed Miata worth it?
#1
The base price of the Mazdaspeed Miata is $25,500 and puts out 178 hp. With a IHI turbocharger that puts out 7.25 maximum psi. Here's the link:

It just doesn't seem like it is.... Sad

It depends on what you mean by "worth it"

Despite the miata curb weight creeping up gradually, the miata is still really lightweight. The new generation cars are quite comfy.
Performance wise, 178hp is'nt stellar, but when you take into account the amount of area under the curve that a turbocharger gives you combined with the light weight and stellar suspension and handling of the miata, the car will be very very quick.
And then of course there is the very very easy and cheap power to be had in a turbocharged car.

Can it beat the $5k more expensive S2k? Probably not the 2.2L, but it should be able to keep up respectfully.

Add a little 'mo b00st and the Honda pile can suck its own vtec :p

If you want boosted open-top driving then a 1.6L or 94-95 1.8L miata with a turbo kit will be faster and cost less.

No its not new, nor does it have a warranty. But that all depends on what you want - if its going to look queer, it ought to at least be fast.

LOL!
I think for a new car, it would be worth it. I used to not give Miatas the time of day, but the spec miata crowd have really impressed me and the thought of a boosted miata with no top kinda turns me on in a creepy automotive sort of way Big Grin . I think RJ's idea would be more cost effective though, even if it doesn't have a warranty.

yeah, "for a new car", maybe it's worth "it". Seems like a lot of E30 $$ to me. Smile

That's exactly what I thought when when Jess asked, "So what about this new Miata?"

Good point. But would still be hella fun. I'd rather have an old one and boost it tho.

I really like the idea of the car. I like even more the general path of mazda over the past 2 years. I can't say that I agree with pricing this new hotshot miata so close to the rx-8. I don't think they should be in competing price ranges. The new miata is overpriced and as RJ said, I'd rather use an old one and do the boosting myself. I hope the (my projected) poor sales of this overpriced piece doesn't deter mazda from making a 4th Gen RX-7... or else what am I saving my money for?!?!

you're saving your money for that impending engine rebuild on your rotory. If it doesn't blow up by the time the new RX-7 comes out, then you can get the new car and count on the II blowing up within a month of the purchase of its baby cousin.

Don't hold your breath. IMO it would be smarter for Mazda to make a turbocharged Mazdaspeed RX-8 than to make a whole new chassis for another 7. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 4th gen 7 but for that to happen there has to be a strong business case. I think taking advantage of the chassis they already have built for the RX-8 would probably be the more profitable path, as long as they can get comparable performance to the FD.

Its kinda like what Subaru and Mitsubishi are doing. They have a cheaper mass production chassis that they can build a cheap high performance car out of because they didn't have to spend the development money on a whole new chassis.

yeah, taking the time to develop a whole different chassis, just to appease a small niche market is not a very good idea in the business sense. Unfortuneately, this also applies to the Supra, so I'm not expecting to see another generation real soon that is comparable to the supras of yore.

i like it, but yea for 26k thats really really close to evo/sti territory but it definitely has some potential and the IHI turbos arent all too shabby and if they put LC pistons in it then turning the boost up/bigger turbo is all you'd need to reach some fairly high outputs

You guys are completely missing the point of the miata.
The miata has never been a "good deal" when looking at HP or 1/4 mile figures. The car is a roadster. It isnt aimed at the same person that will be looking at a 4 door RX-8, STi or EVO.
This is why my first post said It depends on what you mean by "worth it"
For many, it is. For us, obviously not.

nope. Tongue

1) Dump the turblo on that miata and put the NA Renesis engine in there. Makes more power, more reliable, in a lighter car... I won't even bother listing all the advantages. Get the Miata's weight back down to what it used to be and stop following the "make it heavier and heavier with each successive update until no-one wants it anymore" marketing trend.

2) Forget about the RX7. I agree, another chassis would be a bad idea, especially since RX8's aren't exactly flying off the shelf.

3) And yes, make a Mazdaspeed RX8, but with a 3 rotor NA in it.

4) Still none of them would be "worth it" to me, but I'll take a used one!

aren't they having some problems turbo charging the rx-8 with its new engine design? do you think it will actually happen?
