I've talked about doing this for like the last 5 years. One of these days I'll make my own cider.

do you crush your own apples? we have done mead, wine, and beer at the house but haven't tried cider. A kid I went to high school with is down with crushing his own apples for his cider. He's still bottling and I'm trying to convince him to just keg.

home brewing and taking taster courses... becoming a certified beer judge... made me a super beer snob. To the point we (Sylvia and I) have had one beer (each), not finished them, paid the bill and never have come back. Every time I buy an import beer I fear what I'm going to taste since there is so much that can go wrong in packaging, transport, and storage.

No, the Orchard side of cider making is a huge amount of work, and doesnt really even save you much money over buying juice.
I buy cider specific juice and blends from a few places in the area. Distillery Lane in MD, Albermarle Cider in Cville, and Old Hill Cider right there in the Harrisonburg area. Basically I have to drive all over the state to get juice. You have no idea how jealous I am of beer brewers who can just go buy a big bag of malted gain!

I also will do store juice, which is dramatically cheaper and can still be good, especially if I add some some flair like cherry or ginger.

Im currently tweaking my process for pasteurization, so I can create off-dry and semi-dry cider.

Funny you mention the snobbery, Anne and I are the same after visiting and sampling about every kind of cider we can get our hands on. It becomes pretty obvious who are genuine cidermakers, vs people just trying to cash in on a trend. (looking at you, Castle Hill)

Had a Weihenstefaner Dunkel Weiss tonight on tap.  Outstanding.

Considered their Lager but wanted to try a Dunkel.

I haven't had many bad German dunkels, especially dunkelweisses. I think Weihenstefaner just makes damn good beer all around. Their hefe is awesome, but you may not like it 'cause it kinda like drinking boozy banana bread.

Our nanny brought me this back from Germany. Apparently, beers are hyperlocal in that each town/city has their own and you can't buy them anywhere else in Germany other than where they're made. She said this is the casual drinker for Munich. It was FANTASTIC.

Nope.  My girlfriend and I both brew beer and ciders.  I've got a 3 tap kegerator in the basement.

I'm definitely no beer snob though.  I like just about any beer that doesn't taste like coffee.

Damn that sucks.  Bells is consistently one of the best in every category they make a beer for.

Seriously? Two Hearted, Hopslam, Oberon, Expedition stout? As far as I'm aware, they're one of the largest craft breweries right now. The aren't revolutionary, but Two Hearted has been such a consistent IPA over the years. And Oberon is so slammable during the summer.

Hopefully Larry can get this shit worked out between him and the distro because they're only pissing off consumers.

Yeah, seriously. Lots of better options local to VA/DC.

I meant seriously to not having heard of them. Agreed that there's a lot better options available, but when I'm at some shit bar, I know Two Hearted will be consistent.

Of course I'd rather sit at home and drink Aslin.

"Largest craft brewery" made me chuckle. Yeah, I've never heard of them... but some of the beer names do sound familiar.

Seattle has like 150 breweries, so you don't find that much that isn't local these days. My problem finding things that don't have hops - that shit tastes like poison.

Is there a size limit for craft breweries? I always equate "craft" to independence rather than size. I'd consider Bell's craft compared to Elysian even though Bell's produces almost 3x as many barrels per year.

Too many breweries are doing over hopped IPAs where IBUs are more important than actual flavor (Bell's is definitely guilty with Hopslam). Aslin has some hop bombs that are less bitter than certain single IPAs

Small and independent, but looks like the craft brewers association defines it as 6 million barrels/year... which seems high to me. I don't really like Elysian's beers, but it was a big to-do when they sold out to AB around here.
