Dash cameras: good idea or paranoia

this was fun.  almost pitted someone on a completely deserted highway, because F me for being on their road.

there was literally nobody around for a quarter of a mile.  just started coming over, KEPT coming over, and never stopped even with me laying on the horn.  well kiss my ass lady, you're not pushing me anywhere, so once i sped up and got back in my lane, she didn't slow down, or get back over....just tucked right in behind me like "wtf are you doing in my lane?"  what i would have given to just drive straight back into her door and send her into the median.

the song selection at the end was complete coincidence and a little morbid, ha. the civic's horn pad is tiny and i was fumbling around trying to slam it but hit the audio controls on the sides of the wheel instead.

people are dumb as shit....

i guarantee it

A+ music choice.

i like to daydream about if i would have had the balls to hold my ground if my wife, son, and new puppy weren't in the car.  i would have enjoyed the new front end, it needed a repaint anyway.

I need to stop being lazy and start pulling video off of mine when people do dumb shit.

Last week I had a similar incident, except the woman was passing me, then turned into my lane when half of her car was still next to mine. Some wise anticipation ("this bitch is going to do something stupid") and screeching brakes prevented bodywork.

Ive had some other gold nuggets over the years too, wish I saved them.

I need to get a camera for the F150. Looking for something small as it already has the driver-assist bullshit stuck next to the mirror. Time to read up on these but any recommendations would be great.

Also curious if I could get something set up for the racecar to have dual front/rear view going. The issue is that I'd want to be able to save all of the footage, not just a certain 5-minute clip. Is that possible? Our longest races would be 50 minutes or so when you add in time on grid and coming off track.

Ive owned about 8 of them. These are my current favorites. I have 1 pointing out the front and 1 pointing out the back. I really like the wedge form factor.

Id have to check but IIRC a 64gig card gives you about 4 hours of footage. The only problem for race use is that if you use the auto-loop feature it chops the footage up into 5 minute segments. (so it can delete the old stuff when it runs out of space) so you would have to combine it all in post. You can turn that off but then you lose auto-loop.

everything Evan said but agreed with this especially for a front facing camera. they hide great up behind a rear view mirror in this shape. i have one of the other popular styles in my wife's xterra and its not as clean of a fit by far, and i almost never need to actually see the display screen which is the only advantage that shape really has.

i use a 32gig Samsung EVO micro SD in both cams. i have had bad luck with other cheaper micro SD's failing in the summer heat, especially since both are totally exposed under the windshield. the Samsungs seem to be the most reliable choice for me so far.

Easily done (racecar)-- I use SJCAM (which is a knock off GoPro). They basically have a "Car Mode" which starts recording once 12v powered is received by the camera.

As for smaller footprint dashcam -- The Mobius camera looks decent.

Ahh, the "car mode" is perfect... I could wire it to a switch on the dash and make life super easy. Thanks!

If the wife/kid wasn't in the car i definitely hold my lane in the GTI now. It's still nice, but after 8+ years i've entered the IDAF about the accident if it's your fault. Came really close to an a-hole in a Mustang the other day, but i wasn't budging. he moved back over; he knew what he was doing...

I need to get a dashcam... for whatever replacement for the GTI that i get I'll get one for that vehicle.

all i'm saying is if you can clear all those codes on the Z3 you can easily hardwire a dashcam buddy

lol, I'll be very delicate with any electronic additions with the z. I feel like if i look at it funny it'll throw another code. plus i'd like to capture more of the idiot drivers here so it'll go in my daily.

I feel you, but tapping the brakes is a lot easier than dealing with side of the road arguments, police reports, insurance companies, bodyshops, lowball insurance estimates, poor bodywork etc.

I just let the assholes be assholes and make my way to work. Its a lot lower stress that way too.
