So I know this could come downhill really fast but I figured I'd ask. Does anyone have any experience adding quality back to photos using Photoshop or some similar product? I have a picture of my dog that I may want to get blown up in the future that was originally taken on my fiance's iPhone. But she does not have the original (I though photos backed up to iTunes but what do I know). She is obsessed with editing pictures on the phone using shitty free editing apps that completely destroy quality as we found out when we got a bunch of photos she had edited printed out. (maybe it was Walmarts fault but I blame the apps).
Either way, the only copy of the photo I have has pretty bad lighting and I fear it'll be pixelated as f*** when blown up. I'm not looking to hire anyone as it's not really that worth it to me and I'm not looking for someone to spend hours editing each pixel but if there was an easy way to plug it in and edit the picture, I would really appreciate it. I do not have Photoshop or know how to use it which is why I ask.

Essentially I want to get one of those canvas print things from Costco (think they're like 20x30) or somewhere else maybe. I'm not sure it matters but my thoughts are since those kinda give it that "painted look" if the quality is already shit, it'll get shittier. If I'm wrong in that assumption, then just say so and I'll give it a shot the way it is. But I think I'd also like a nice printed picture. It was a somewhat candid shot that I really like in general.
I'm not sure I uploaded the best quality one and it stayed the max resolution I have. I think the max one is in the 2000's

Here's the other ones I have of that particular image.
Or I have unedited different images I could use but the leash would have to be removed from the dock one or the background and couch changed out for something in the bottom which sounds like more work than it's worth.
What are the pixels on the original image? You would need about a 4500 X 3000 file for a 20x30 and could get away with 150dpi I believe. Scotty B may be able to shed a bit more light on that. Are you set on a 20x30? Why not an 11x14? You could get away with 1008x792 pixels or so.

Apparently only one of those is 1535x2143
But the dock one is 5312x2988
I'm not sure. For the canvas print, I think I'd want it to be at least bigger than 11x14
Edit: just kidding. The largest I'd probably go is 16x20 or maybe 18x24. They also have 14x14 or 12x16.
And I don't think it is supposed to give the image an art effect like I thought. I guess they picture I saw my friend had done just got messed up when they blew it up

you can't add quality back. whatever resolution the shot was taken at natively is what you've got to work with. in your case, yes its going to be pixelated as F. the dog on the dock is a much better place to start.
you can "cheat" it a bit, by doing stuff in photo editing like adding "sharpness" and artificially bumping up the DPI of the image to smooth out the native resolution at large sizes but you're still just manipulating the guts of whatever level you started at. in other words its like trying to put a polish and coat of wax over a hood that's been rock chipped and swirl marked in order to make it look freshly painted. it'll look nice enough far away, but you'll clearly notice up close.
i get this all the time from clients that take washed out, pixelated 72dpi phone pics with half their head eclipsing the sun and then ask me why i can't turn it into a professional-grade headshot for their company listing

That's awesome! Thanks Garrett! How hard would it be to remove the wagon too? But also, when I pull it off Tapatalk, it goes to like 500x800 or something. Is that my phone or the forum in general?
And if the best one on the rock is the 2000x1500, could I get away with the 18x24? Or 16x20?

This right here. Looking at it now you're likely stuck with a smaller sized print.
You can print on canvas or something that doesnt penalize you as much for lower quality but thats not going to turn your 5x8 quality photo into a 20x30.

Awesome! Thank you sir! I'm on my phone now but I assume I can pull the full size image off the forum from my computer?
Is there any fixing the lighting in the one on the rock so I can try and get it blown up or do you guys think it looks good enough as is?
This is the highest quality I think

So when I pull the attachment off the forum, the resolution is only like 576x1000 or something. Maybe it didn't stay full size when I uploaded it?
Ok, I was finally able to pull the photos from my phone, I have no idea how the image folders are setup but it was really weird trying to find them in the phone folders. Anyways I have the dock and rock picture on my computer now in the maximum resolution I have them in. They are too large to upload to the forum I guess. I can email them to anyone who wants to help although I understand if you don't want to lol. Thanks for all the hard work Garret, I was unaware that they weren't uploading in full resolution to the forum although I should have figured. My bad.
