GRMS Challenge Vehicle Proposal 1

Quote:I am selling my 1985 Mazda RX7 which has a Ford 2.3 turbo engine swapped into it. I did not do the swap. I bought this car several weeks ago and have ZERO time to work on it. I now have another car in mind and need the money pronto!

122k on the chassis
-1986 merkur 2.3t engine
-rotated upper intake
-knife edged and ported lower intake
-front mount intercooler
-big VAM from turbocoupe
-t3 turbo
-new plugs,wires, cap, and rotor
-t5 tranny from a turbocoupe
-willwood mastercylinder for clutch master cylinder (so i could use a hydro clutch instead of converting to cable)

suspension
-1985 gslse suspension (front and rear)

misc.
-the motor and tranny are on solid motor mounts
-battery located in the back
-no interior behind the seats
-walbro 255 fuel pump
-sound deading material is GONE from the seats back.
-there is no exhaust on the car. It's kinda loud, but could be muffled and be streetable.

This is taken from the tricitiesmustang.com forum. I'd have just posted the link but you have to register to view it. There are pictures up there in the classifieds if you feel like registering and seeing what I'm talking about.

Dude is currently looking for 1k but it has been listed for a while...maybe he'll do less. I shouldn't need to explain the pros to you all, the only con is price. Opinions?

That engine in that form is good for around 230ish hp. Put on a nice header and get another 10, and with my EEC tuner, we could get a little more. FYI. Yay Merkur!

Good to know. What can those engines handle? Would it have a problem with a 75 shot?

85s are REAL rare.... I would think this could do some heavy damage to the competition. If pete knows how to work on the engine, the rest is cake.... We need heavy donations

In all seriousness, donations aside... we need FUNDRAISING... to make this an official MM project.

but it looks like a pretty good begining.... i'd be sold on it if we could get it for $500  but i'm a jew.

Sure. Get us a shop with a full set of tools including tig and mig welding equipment and we'll give it a shot. If you can't provide us some of that, then we'll stick with a car that won't require hours of custom fabrication.

Not at all...I wish we could get it for 500 too. In fact I said it a while ago that spending no more than 500 bucks on the car itself would be optimal...but this is a very light, rwd platform with a pretty cool motorswap already complete. That is why I would suggest we concentrate on raising some money, but talk with this guy and see if he'll go for 800 or so. I've got his number and I will try and call me soon and see what we can do with price.

Is this a fairly common swap? Do we know how it was done? How much fabrication was involved and if so, if the fabrication work fails, can we fix it? Before we seriously talk about purchasing this car, we should research the shit out of it. I'd imagine the wiring is a beeyatch. Is this guy skilled or did he ricerneck (borrowing rex's term) the thing together.

But fundraising has to begin taking place before we talk about buying. We have zero bucks. We've also had zero talk about bucks. How are we going to raise funds. I'm low on ideas but will help out with whatever anyone else suggests.
Travis, I think you should start street racing the local ricers for pink slips. We'll get this project together 10 seconds at a time. Big Grin

The swap was not done by the guy selling the car. I suck at wiring but I don't feel it would be difficult, just time consuming if it needs to be redone. You got that mad welding skills....if that engine needs to be kept in place that is now your job.

I've got a game plan for the money raising which I'll break out at the first meeting next semester.

Sure, but I'm not sure if I'll have access to the TIG and MIG equipment over the summer. I also dont have the time to take on that big of a project. Im also not sure if I trust myself welding anything structural. I'd have to search some old threads, but I dont believe THAT much fabrication is required for it anyways.

If anyone needs needs something welded and can give me alot of time to complete it, I may be able to help out. I just TIG welded up my cracked exhaust (It cracked almost 360 degrees around)

Assuming decent maintainance history, it will handle a 50 shot confortably. 75 would cut its life down.

Mike is absolutely correct...it only actually has to survive it for about 10 seconds, unless we spray out the hole. And then hopefully 12 seconds or less.

The drag racing occurs on the first day and you get as many runs as you want. Apparently, this is when the majority of the cars kill themselves. The show and autoX is in the 2nd day, so we need to make sure we'll last that long :-)

could you imagine the grand displays of firey glory if they had the drag racing as the last event? damn that would rock hard.
