SH Prelude

has anyone driven the latest prelude model SH? I've driven a base one, but was trying to determine the value of the SH handling. Heres a link describing what the SH does

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://hondaprelude.sitemynet.com/tech.html">http://hondaprelude.sitemynet.com/tech.html</a><!-- m -->

The SH weighs 3042 and the base is 2954, so not much of a difference but still a pig.

SH's are cool, I drove a few this past spring, it handles well, not as well as the 4WS though. I remember you said it was going to be a daily driver, so the Super Handling is great but if you ever decide to mod it, some aftermarket stuff won't work with it like SK2 manifold, some suspension parts, oh, and apparently, it's cheaper to replace the entire SH assembly than to repair it. Food for thought. More importantly, a Jackson Racing Supercharger still fits, and if you wreck, i'll buy it off of you.

Preludes are a pain to work on... FWIW. They're nice cars, have good torque but they are pretty heavy and you do feel the weight. For the $$ you spend on a daily driver, 325 > Prelude SH.

So you can't get a true manual with the SH?

It is a manual.

SH = auto torque biasing lsd-type thing (not a true LSD). Probably more expensive, heavier and less effective than just a torsen diff. Oh well... and makes changing the trans fluid and oil a real pain in the ass.

hmmm, didn't consider that part... if only I didn't like them so much. It's kinda like John and the Z- he's always wanted one. then again this is all dependent on where I end up after graduation, what kind of vehicle I need, and $.

oh a 96 vtec is my favorite, but I've basically given up on finding one that isn't riced to hell or destroyed.

I see a few around the burg, one thats stock up the hill from me but has a big dent in the side. They are just so rare.

i've always been a fan too. My friend mark had one before he got is rsx-s. I love the stock seats, driving position is kinda low, but the car's nice. Hard to find in good condition though....

Alright alright, all this talk about 4g vtec's. There's not a lot of difference from the vtec than the si and the s. Obviously engine, brakes, a rear amp, and leather as standard. The engine is cake to swap because they share common mounts except the trans mount. It will bolt on, but you want the meatier prelude mount. The brakes are of no consequence because everyone swaps in acura legend twin pistons anyways. If you get a 4g, then it would be cool to get a 94-95 because the interior is oh so nice. I've been hunting for the Electroluminiscent gauges for a good while now. What else . . . Oh, buyer beware. I bought mine from a total ricer. Should have figured since it had a prelude HypeR trunk emblem. Thing was effed up for example: He disconnected the trunk release cable to rig up some indiglo badges. Exhaust was so loud, even now, I think Dave's exhaust isn't all that bad. Oh, don't get the 96. It's the exact same thing as a 94-95 except OBD-II. 5G Ludes are semi-open deck. Meaning they're are constructed like b-series engines. H22A4 have semi-free standing cylinders, b-series have true open deck, free standing cylinders. Some say, open deck can't take boost well, but Inline Pro says they run open deck motors with thicker head gaskets, and can run boost into the high teen's.

Moving on. ATTS on SH's. Active Torque Transfer System. Great idea. It's a LSD with intelligence. The computer increases the outside wheel speed to help turning, but if you're going in a straight line, it helps evenly distribute power to both wheels. Great for daily driving, but most guys who track their cars break it, then throw it away. In summation, RJ is right.

The ATTS system is too slow to react to really be effective for autox/track use. Nice feature though. Clutch Diff > Torsen Diff > Electrogizmos > Viscous Diff > Open Diff..... Wink

What would you classify an automatic torque biasing limited slip as?
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

So you'd order a Ferrari 430 without the e-diff?

The ATTS system was lauded by many to be an awesome piece of machinery and the Prelude SH was crowned the bet handling car for under $30k in its heyday. Unfortunately its not the most durable thing Honda has built and ultimately you can't have that with a track car.

Electro-wizardy is cool when implemented correctly like the AYC/ACD on the Evo, e-diff on the Ferrari 430, SH-AWD, and stuff like the computer controlled diffs on WRC cars. But its painfully obvious from this short list that usually its not implemented well for a performance application. I'd dare say only the AYC/ACD and e-diff are the only two that really fit the bill for street cars.
