Yeah, I've also been surfing the GRM MB's looking at other people's cars, and I've got a list of like, 10 2005 projects that people are doing. Keeping a close eye on what works and what doesn't.

We might be able to get a turbo (or two) from a salvage yard for cheep. How costly would it be to mate a turbo to an engine for which it was not specifically designed, if it's even possible?

If it's possible, and the cost not prohibitive, we could do something outrageous like use a turbo from a turbo-diesel semi. They're probably big, heavy, and inefficient, but if the price is right...

It's possible, but you need to make custom piping, fabricate a manifold (or 2), and worry about clearance issues. Also, you don't need a semi's turbo - it would spool so slow that it would be worthless, and once it got up to speed it would prob blow the headgasket into about 1000 pieces.

Also, you need to change your Avatar - I keep getting you confused with Jack.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Myuki == fanboyish and hard to pronounce for most of us, + most of us look at avatars first, hence the TurboOmni/Chris confusion.

Turbo'ing a car that was not origionalyl turbo'd is a bad idea. Take the 2.3 for example:

2.3 Ranger, NA vs 2.3 Turbo
Differences:

Turbo has:
Lower compession
Forged Pistons
Forged Rods
Stronger Crank
Hardened Valve Seats
Different Cam
Stronger Exhaust Manifold

And I still blew one up. If I'd slapped a turbo on a Ranger 2.3, it would probabyl not last past 7psi. The block is bulletproof, so that's not the problem. It's what's inside that counts (in this situation).

i have been looking around at people's cars on the Grassroots site and one thing that keeps sticking out is the idea of a V8 in a RX-7....how much fun would that be, around 400 horsepower in that small of a car....only downside is gonna be finding the traction to get it to go down the stripe and not make the autox course look like a drift

What do you guys think....

my take on things is to center our attention on keeping the weight down, not the power up. i also think rwd should be a priority, mostly for the drag competition...especially since we probably wont have drag slicks to put on a fwd car that would make up for the initial loss of traction off the line compared to a rwd car (driver skill not taken into account when launching).

i like the V8 rx7 or 240-280 Z, using a 5.0 from the rustang...its a good basic engine with solid torque. its been done a few times, and the chassis is light and supports a huge aftermarket.

i also like the V8 merkur. domestic stuff is plentiful and cheap, and Pete has mad crazy experience with this platform and could provide some wisdom

i think we should avoid a mid engined car, like the old wedgie mr2. if shit blows up and we have to dig through the engine bay it will be a service nightmare. plus they are not the easiest to deal with at the limit, like in the autocross.

i also think we should be careful about boost. there's alot of plumbing to leak and alot of peripheral equipment we will need to source if the car is to have the boost bumped up or if we are boosting an NA motor (intercooler, manifold, HG, boost controller, blow off/recirc valve, injectors, etc)

i think we have alot of very knowledgable people in this club who can put together a crazy car...but i want the first priority to be finishing, not blowing stuff up 8)

According to this table of class definitions for passenger cars from cars.com (created in 2003), "Mini: 1,500 ÔÇô 1,999 pounds curb weight" is the lightest class of passenger car.

I didn't find a table of mini passenger cars by year; but, I did find a collection of web pages with crash-test ratings for mini passenger cars for 1993-2004. The URLs for these pages are of the form "http://www.nhtsa.com/NCAP/Cars/YYYYMini.html", where YYYY is a place-holder for the four-digit year. (Note: The cars tested in a given year may be a proper subset of the cars sold in that year.)

I propose using a '89-'93 Suzuki Swift (curb weight: 1610 lbs).

an old school Mini would be pretty cool- some engine swap and go-kart handling. FWD wouldn't be best though...

Can we make the car a semi-tube frame? We could still use the stock body panels, just make some of it a tube frame and lose a whole bunch of weight... Ohhhhh I'm so evil *pinky to corner of lip*

With the cost of steel these days the frame would blow the budget Sad
