Visit to DC
#1
It's looking like we'll be taking a semi-spur-of-the-moment family trip to DC this weekend, maybe leave here Saturday afternoon and come back Monday or Tues. Any suggestions on places to stay? DC proper seems spendy, but is it worth it to find something outside and drive or ride the metro in? I've really got no concept of how easy or hard it might be to get around on a weekend vs work day.

We don't have any specific plans but figured we could hit up a Smithsonian or two, check out the cherry tree stuff, etc.

And on an unrelated note, anybody interested in dog and/or house sitting for a couple of day?

Stay in DC Proper, avoid Metro if you can. Worth it.

The weekend will be nutty given the cherry blossoms. I would try to avoid the National Mall area until Monday if you can.

You may save some money by staying at a hotel in Rosslyn and taking the Metro into the city. Check out the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn as it's only about a block from the Metro stop and you can ride right in on orange, silver or blue lines. Not sure if that's the best option given you've got smaller kids though.

Let's see... the zoo is a good time for all ages. The Renwick Gallery has a super cool exhibit right now that I somehow haven't seen beyond instagram photos, but if you're up on a weekday, you can probably avoid lines to get in. Looks to be pretty visually stimulating so I bet the kids would like that. Avoid the Spy Museum, it's expensive and frankly isn't that interesting.

My kickball league has games on Sunday at Stead Park on 16th and near the Washington Monument on the Mall, so if you're near either of those areas, come cheer us/other teams on between 11ish AM and 4ish PM! Fair warning, my team is pretty bad. Stead Park has a great little childrens' playground area off to the side.

Food everywhere is pretty good, Yelp reviews are usually a good indicator.

Navy Yard has some great food and views, and a big water feature that kids tend to splash around in that looks fun.

I've found myself spending a lot of time up by Dupont Circle/Logan Circle areas. Very walkable and lots of good eats there. Should you want your sightseeing to include all the embassies, that's where they are.

Download EmbarkDC if you have an iPhone, it's the best Metro schedule/planning app I've found. Good to have an app like that so you avoid waiting around on trains for 10+ minutes.

Agree on skipping the spy museum. Renwick Gallery looks really cool, I've been trying to get there for a while and never get around to it. Can't go wrong with the National History Museum. If you get tickets early enough the kids might enjoy the view from the top of the Washington Monument (this is back open I believe?). It's a shame Trump decided to turn the old post office pavilion into a hotel - the views from the top of that building were better than the monument.

If you end up near City Center (by the convention center) hit up Milk Bar for some amazing milkshakes/ice cream/cookies. Other than that I don't eat in DC enough to give a solid recommendation.

That's a shame to hear about the spy museum, I always imagined it'd be awesome. We're kind of thinking the natural history would be the way to go on Monday, hopefully not too crowded and we we can just walk the mall and visit some monuments.

That Rossyln hotel might not be a bad option Jake, thanks for the tip. Their regular published rate was $129/night, but if you select the Gov't rate, it changed to $226/night. Confusedhock:

DJ, we're going to ignore your undoubtably sound advice and they our luck with the metro from Rosslyn.

Apparently there's an easter egg hunt or something on Monday that 35k kids go to... so much for a quiet time to visit during the week.

If anyone needs (small) stuff from Hburg brought up or back down, let me know.

Nah, I meant if you were coming from Vienna/Reston etc. Rosslyn will be an easy commute down (Although still expensive hotels). If you are still there Monday, I work in Rosslyn and would be up for lunch.

The kids had a blast on the Rosslyn metro escalator, they probably could have rode that all day and been happy. We're heading back into the mall area this morning, so we'll spare you the party that is eating with three young kids. Smile

For the first 20min, yeah, I think you're right. Any longer and we'd be walking back into a lord of the flies situation.

The trip went well over all, thanks for all the tips/suggestions! Sorry we missed your kickball games Jake, we were wandering around the Natural History most of Sunday. We drove back over the bridge Sunday night in search of the Milk Bar, and good golly that place operates out of a small footprint. Took about 20 min to get an order in, and I was really impressed at how much their flavors tasted like what they were called...but the two options were cereal milk or pretzel flavor, both of which prompted a volley of 'ewwwwws' and 'this is the worst ice cream ever' from the kids. I kinda had to agree, I really wanted to like it, but nope.

The pretzel flavor was as salty as an alumni in the clothing thread. did we just catch them on a bad flavor week, or is that what they do?

They always have cereal milk and yeah it's definitely an acquired taste. They usually switch it up week to week, but I think they have other flavors like their Crack Pie and Birthday Cake. Disappointed to hear that the pretzel flavor is no good. I really like salted desserts. Their cookies are the bomb though.

I mean, the pretzel legitimately tasted like an Aunt Annie's thrown in a blender, so give it a shot.

I'm still kicking myself for not getting a crack pie, I have no idea what it is, but with a name like that, how could it be bad :dunno:

If I'm going to pay $20 for a museum, I'll be over at the Newseum instead. Far more interesting.
