WTB: Cheap Reliable Non-german (but I repeat myself) beater
#1
Let me preface this with: Please spare me the peanut gallery comments. Serious thread, cash in hand, in short:

Wanted:

Inexpensive reliable "beater".

My fiancée's twin sisters are currently auto-less, and rely on bumming rides for transportation to and from school, work, etc. My life would be much easier if they had a car to call their own, so I thought I'd see if the MM search engine heard any rumors or lies about possible options.

Here's the Req's:
Automatic: they can't drive stick, don't want to learn, fucks given: 0
Reliable: If they get stranded, I'll feel bad. I want something that requires as little attention as possible. Looking for a cat: Keep food and water filled, litterbox empty. Not Dog, take out every day, brush, feed, play, cuddle, etc.
Cheap: They're college students.

Preferences:
4 doors are better than 2.
Four cylinders are better than 6.
Fuel efficient is better than Not.
Front wheels are better than rear wheels.

So I'm kind of thinking early 2000's Front-Drive Lex, Acura, Honda, Toyota, Basic Beige Standard Transportation Module A.

If anyone stumbles across anything, please let me know.

Thanks,

Rex

How cheap is cheap?

Those early 00s TSXs were pretty nice cars, would probably fit the bill.
Now: 07 Porsche Cayman S | 18 VW Tiguan

I'd say "2nd gen TL" but that's from the time where Honda couldn't figure out a V6/auto combination that would stay together.

Here's a Legend that could be good - the older autos like this are reliable per my friend who owns a fuckload of them: http://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/5403106368.html
Now:
'16 Ram 1500 | '97 BMW M3 | Some Press Loan

Then:
87 BMW 325e | 91 BMW 535i | 96 BMW 328i | 95 BMW 325i | 95 Mazda Miata | 13 Focus ST | 09 BMW 128i | 00 Pontiac Firebird | 05 Yukon Denali | 96 BMW 328iC | 11 Ford F-150 | 06 BMW M3 | 10 Range Rover SC | '03 Ford Ranger | '18 Ford F-150 | '01 BMW X5 | '98 Volvo S70 T5M

Jason Happ just got rid of his '99ish Camry beater for dirt, dirt cheap, like less than $1k, shame timing didn't work out on that.

I literally had a conversation with Amanda about that car, she said "sounds great" and when I came back to the thread it was gone.

I'll take Vanilla for $400 Alex. But seriously those are good finds for the requirements.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Yeah I'm on the civic train as well. Older Acuras as Jake said weren't known for having awesome transmissions. The 2G TL / CL, etc. were ripe with transmission issues.

Sure thing. Saturn SL. Super reliable, timing chains, easy to find, don't incur the Japanese premium.

Oh man, after all the trouble my father had with the ABS computer (and tail lights, and oil leaks, and etc etc) I think I'll pass on the "Different Kind of Car".

Honda or bust. Even if you're not a car person, who would want to be seen driving that saturn abomination?

No, it didn't . I drove mine for a year with roughly $150 in repairs ($100 of which I should have just left alone) got rid of it because of rust on the subframe, but mine was also a 94, not a 2000+. Still ran just fine as it drove away.
