My brother drives a Mazda protege, and he brought it in to have the timing belt changed a few weeks ago. Anyways about a week after he got it back he started hearing this screeching sound when he turned on the car. Now its even worse. The car has this screeching sound when it idles/at low rpms, and then it goes away. It sounds like a belt is rubbing against something, but were not really sure. Anyway he's gonna bring it back to the shop and make em fix it, but were both kinda curious whats causing it. Any ideas?

Probably an accessory belt

Indeed. An accessory belt is either too loose, too tight, or not worn enough. If you're mechanically inclined, play with the tensioner a little (while the car is OFF) and see if it goes away. Don't loosen it too much, though, or the accessory won't work.

accessory belts? what're those? Tongue

honestly, i wouldn't do a damn thing if i were you. you paid to get the job done right, so go back and let them do it right. i certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it though. notice anything not working properly? i.e. lights dim, ac not blowing cold, steering is difficult?

actually no, i havnt. The only one of those i havnt experienced is steering, and he hasnt said anything about it, which is why i find the accessory belt answer kinda weird. Im sure you guys are right tho, anyway believe me we're not gonna do anything to it, they fucked it up, they can fix it. god damn wyguls =-0
