I don't suppose anyone wants a FOUR cyl Honda Element?

I'm trying to keep myself away from the VW dealer because I'm afraid I'll black out and wake up with an order slip for a GTI in my hand, so I'm not sure how much legroom has improved. For what it's worth none of my rear seat passengers have complained in the MKV, it makes excellent use of the space it does have, and I imagine the MKVII would only be better.

I would wager that although the Golf/Sportwagen has less legroom than the Passat, it will be better for trying to shove shit like a woodstove into them thanks to the box-on-wheels design.

If you do decide to check out the Golf/Sportwagen more and there's anything I can do as your Fairfax area liaison let me know! I'm actually probably going to go tomorrow morning to pick up an oil filter and see if I can get the bolts to do the front subframe fix, so I can bring a tape measure and send pictures if necessary.

EDIT: Carmax has a handful of 6speed TDI Sportwagens with around 50k around the $19-21k mark. Could do one of those plus a Doug Demuro Carmax Warranty to insure yourself against that nastly HPFP issue. :dunno:

I was sad to read that the Demuro special warranty pricing has sky rocketed. They must have caught on. http://jalopnik.com/you-cant-get-a-chea ... 1655587419

Yeah I wonder if the extended warranty on a TDI has been similarly adjusted for the possibility of an $8,000 HPFP failure. Might be worth making a phone call just to see

No, and they shouldn't, it's listed as 28" of legroom IIRC, which is surprisingly about the same as the CX5. I'm 6'2" and in the new one I sat in, my scientific test of putting the driver's seat where I'd want it, then sitting behind that, left my knees just brushing the front seat. But sitting in the back of the Passat is more like, well, sitting in the front. Or in the Element.

SlimKlim Wrote:$8,000 HPFP failure...
I looked that up the other day to find that most were said to be misfueling, and the pump is like ONE thousand, not EIGHT. I guess I'm not too worried about it.

That um... that's pretty tempting

Yeah I saw that too, I think the $8k figure happened when people put gas in them and every single goddamn component in the fuel system had to be replaced. For what it's worth I see oodles of TDIs up here that seem to enjoying highly pressurized fuel delivery, and to my knowledge the TDI Beetle my dad bought as a company car in '98 is still alive and well with well over 200k on it. We also had a '98 TDI Jetta that we sold with 175k and saw it banging around town for years afterwards just in significantly worse cosmetic condition.

Isn't the HPFP in a direct injection gas car about the same? They can't cost TOO much considering how many cars have that now. And why would just a little gas destroy a diesel one, or hurt the rest of the fuel system? Odd.

Yeah and the manufacturers that were having HPFP issues seem to be smoothing them out. Apparently some FSI GTIs had problems with them but I haven't heard of anyone having a pump problem on a TSI car. (Aside from being freaked out by the pressure check tapping or whatever the hell it does that sounds like a woodpecker in the right tailight while it's warming up.) The N54 BMWs seemed like they could not get a goddamn pump that works, but I haven't heard of any issues with the single turbo N55 version. However, that could just be because my friends are too poor to drive 2011+ BMWs and I just haven't heard about it.

oh man..are you one of those demuro brown nosers in the comments on jalopnik? I can't for the life of me figure out why people think this guy is some kind of king humour of the internet. His style is 100% predictable - it's like family guy, you don't know what dumb analogy or metaphor is coming, but you know it is.

That being said, his articles are usually informative and interesting, but I just have a hard time getting on his bandwagon.

considering I haven't ever heard of him before the above and I don't post on jalopnik, no. My wife thought the photographer article was pretty damn funny too, so :dunno:
all I can fault him with in a limited sample size is that he does at times seem like he is trying too hard, but still is entertaining. conversing with readers in the comment section is a crowd pleaser too

FWIW I did sell the E, coworker is already digging into it. I suspect he'll be driving it to work in a few weeks. I think we both got a decent deal.
Moby the Passatboat is great, filled it up sunday and range showed ~820 miles. Jess drove her regular ~82 mi commute yesterday and she said the range was still 801 when she got home. Also I was able to ride in the back sunday, between the kids and their car seats, and it was pretty sweet. Could still get in and out past them pretty easily too. Neither the E nor the E46 will allow such nonsense.
I would start a project thread but uh... I don't expect to do anything to this car for years. Smooth sailing!

but it COULD have an $8k repair that i've never heard of (good chance it's pretty rare) so it's a shit car. instant dismissal. i'd rather have a 2.0T that's guaranteed to have problems.
