I guess this is mainly to appeal to the massive e30 crew here (I shoulda just sent PMs 
)
They are grey cloth in in place your body will touch, and black vinyl on the sides/backs. They were reupholstered somewhat recently, but the center of the seatbacks is a little crooked on the stitching. Also, the cable for the passenger seat side release has snapped, so the handle doesn't work. It still tilts forward, you just have to use the switch on the bottom of the seat. I used all of the bracketry on my new seats, but I have some stuff left over that I'll toss in.
I loved them when I had them because they hold you in well, I just found some ultra sweet seats with bolsters so big they practically serve as armrests.
