Racedeck tile design ideas

Evan, good to hear you're dropping the black/white thing. i always thought that scheme was a bit "showroom" and not enough "garage", if that makes sense, plus white can't hold up to the grime. are you using the racedeck freeflow or the diamond stuff? i think you mentioned that you had to tear up tiles before because of dog pee so i'm assuming the latter. i love the freeflow stuff from an aesthetic standpoint because of the way the angles catch the light. reminds me a bit of a carbon fiber effect:

anxious to see what you get when you're done. i'm going to be doing mine in July and i wish racedeck was in my budget. i'll probably go with an epoxy coat + urethane.

yeah the freeflow stuff looks really cool, but I dont have a drain in the garage, and I dont want tons of dirt getting under the floor so Im sticking with solid tiles.

I looked into the epoxy (for like the 4th time) and after way too much reading I came to the same conclusion that I have in the past, it takes a lot of prep work and a lot of time to do it right, and even then there is still some risk that you can get lift due to environmental factors.
Just make sure you do a moisture test, grind instead of etch and use a primer first. That should end up with good results. Personally I like Legacy Industrial's product line and would use them if I was doing epoxy.

It occurs to me I need to think about this too, I hope to have a new garage in a couple weeks! I'm seeing $3-$3.50 / tile, but I don't see the prices directly from RaceDeck. Is that what the price is when you order 500 some tiles Evan?

its not my first choice. i think unless you're welding or placing enormous loads on the floor, tiles/deck is the way to go. its just not in my budget and i need something on the floor. i hate the prep involved since that's a very time intensive thing and can totally ruin the end product.

i'm pretty sold on Rock Solid products, but the kicker is that they're only carried through Menard's which is like Lowe's of the midwest....I can't get them to sell to me direct. supposedly goes on in a day, pours straight out of a pouch so its not messy, and is very tough. i just don't see many reviews on it, unfortunately.

tiles have their drawbacks too. unfortunately there isnt anythign out there that is perfect. CVT stains, racedeck isnt watertight, epoxy lifts, porcelian is $$$$ and the grout gets nasty etc etc.

Oh the polyurea, yeah thats some cool stuff. Definitely sounds like it answers some of the weaknesses of epoxy. Biggest drawback I saw was that it starts to harden really really fast, so you have to wait for a cool dry day, add a little acetone, and work quickly. A few people have writeups on it on garage journal, like everything, both good and bad.
looks like lowes carries it now as a special order

I wonder what it would cost to spray the whole garage with spray in bedliner :dunno:

The garagejournal super secret special price is [shhh dont tell anyone]three dollah[/] sq ft. Used to be $2.60. Sad

you can get the motofloor which is same company as racedeck but lighter duty for ~$2 / sq ft

thanks for that Lowe's link, i'll look into that. i'm not 100% sold on Rock Solid anyway, it just looked appealing because i'll have 2 days max to intall this stuff.

i was curious about that. apparently racedeck makes a private lable product for Costco that is a little less expensive.

i've also considered concrete stain with a urethane or polyurea coat (something UV stable), but i don't think staining is very cheap? i like that you can't mess it up, you know?...stain just does its thing in a random pattern and you get what you get.

i like this stain look

so looking at Menard's site, i CAN get Rock Solid flooring kits shipped to me, but i CAN'T get their polyurea top coat. i'm wondering if I go with 2 kits (~500 sq. ft) of Rock Solid epoxy and then just buy Legacy Industrial polyurea direct from them for the top coat. looks like about $600 not counting tools i'll need.

That stain is awesome. Has anyone ever looked into polished concrete? I have no idea how much $$$ it is, but would take out all the coating nonsense and look good. Not sure if it helps with oils etc...does the staining?

Both stain and polish need to be "treated" every couple of years which means all your stuff has to come out of the garage

polishing concrete requires a densifier (almost as much as epoxy) and then several stages of grinding and polishing with different grits of diamond grinders (no different from wetsanding paint). Lots of labor hours and hence lots of $$.

staining is pretty awesome though, and looks really high end. Ive been in super pimpy office buildings with nothing but stained concrete and even in that setting it looks great.
