Happy Monday everybody
Past three weeks I've been doing almost 1,000 miles a week in the slowgermandadsedan, and I might be in the market for a detector.
Looking at Passports right now since my distributor for detailing supplies will take nearly $100 each model for me as a nice way of saying thank you for some recent business.
Anyone have some knowledge regarding the Escort/ Passport line and want to help a brother out?
Thanks!

I though we lost our right to use those when we moved to VA?
edit: welcome to the south https://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp50 ... +46.2-1079
we had gotten picked up once in college for having a detector as we drove thru to FL. think it was around a hundred bucks or something.
I am a huge fan of the 9500ix that I had hardwired in the car. You might get flak from some purists / detector snobs that the V1 is the best / most sensitive. The reality is that at that price point every detector is going to be more than fine for you to avoid tickets.
The reason I went with the 9500ix over the V1 and other models was that it has GPS built into it. You can lock out false signals which is a HUGEE benefit when you are driving around town. I know a lot of people with high dollar detectors that leave them in their glove boxes because they always chirp around town. That doesn't do you any good, cops in this area post up in residential / suburban areas all of the time running radar. You saw how quiet mine was. You can also update it online and it has an entire database of every known speed camera, speed trap and red light camera in the US. Pretty handy!
There was a rumor that it was invisible / mostly invisible to Spectre detector detectors which pushed it over the edge for me. Admittedly I ran it a lot in VA on a kill switch and was never pulled over for it, but it is not branded as invisible to RDDs. For that, I think you have to get the Beltronics STi or a detector that is designed to be invisible. That is something you may want to consider living in VA.
I have used that same detector in 3 cars now, each time I just buy a new $40 Smartcord hardwire kit and call it a day. Paid for itself in the first month of ownership.

Definitely illegal in VA. I ran one for years since my first WRX without a single issue. You just can't be a dummy about it, ie. plan out a clean / tucked away install, wire a kill switch, etc. It's a great state to use them in actually because local cops don't expect anyone to have them...so they leave their radars on constantly, no instant-on. You can sometimes pick one up from miles away Troopers are a little wiser but even then I have never seen a state trooper in VA using instant-on.
Keep in mind you are not invincible to tickets though. I was pulled over once by laser (detector actually caught it but if it is "catching" laser it is almost always too late unless you get a reflection off another car) and once by an undercover car that I passed doing more than the speed limit. I got a "failure to obey highway sign" for that one because she had no way to know what my exact speed was ... just that I was going faster than her

Get your HAM license and go to court. This isn't rocket science, even if it's completely unnecessary.
I just got finished doing just shy of 2000 miles in 2 days doing 76 the entire way...never even got looked at sideways by a cop. (Passed a few times, though.)
How fast do you a-holes want to go?

I guaruntee you if I spent a ton of money doing the sexiest, stealthiest V1 install this world has ever seen, I'd be the one guy that got in trouble for it.
I've had the shittiest luck this past year after a 7 year streak with no tickets or infractions to speak of. I used to cruise at 10-15 over no sweat on the interstate, and I made 81 my bitch going between school and home. Then the axe fell and last January I got a muffler ticket in the BMW from some dipshit asshole cop that thought I had cut the exhaust off of it.
Then in September I got nailed in the VW in Herndon. I turned out and accelerated to match the speed of traffic, only to see a motorcycle cop standing in my lane a split second later flagging me over. He was kind of a prick at first but softened up when I (honestly) said I never went through that part of town and had only matched the traffic near me, didn't even have a chance to see a speed limit sign. Still, i was doing 45 in a 25, he knocked it down to 44 and I paid a whopper of a ticket.
Then this past spring I was doing ~70 in a 55 in the BMW and a cop caught me and fussed at me saying I had slowed down when I saw him (which I did) then sped back up again (which I didn't). At least he was pretty nice about it.
Now Lauren busts my balls every time I drive because I "drive like a grandpa" everywhere we go, but fuck man, if I get any more tickets I'm not gonna be able to stomach my insurance premium anymore.

I had a Bell 870i for years and never got caught. It was a great radar detector for the money. You really need something that isnt detectable... if you are running it and getting a bunch of false positives you might want to slow down because its densly populated area anyway.
I blame the yellow bmw
my red integra and beat ass old F150 dont make them flinch. we'll see how long i can hold out with the interga with the pile of parts i have. Sylvia doesnt even look down to see how fast she is going and no one pulls her over...

You would be surprised how many false positives you will get even on the interstate. You can ride in "No-X" mode but you can still get some K band reflection depending on where you are.
If V1 integrated a GPS system it would be the perfect detector. If you live in a suburban area at all or commute into one or the city, it will annoy you constantly.
If you really want to go baller sauce, you can also integrate their laser jammer.

Yeah but one was in a gray VW, that's about as blended in as you can get. It's one of the reasons I bought it.
Lauren drives down the highway like she's delivery a kidney for emergency surgery and she never gets pulled over, beats the shit out of me. :dunno:

Damn, yo. I stopped pushing my luck on the highway after passing a cop doing like 98mph on 64. He didn't even move from the median, but it was enough to see him sitting in the median to scare the shit out of me haha

Well I'm glad a drive a common, econmical car, with a normal color or I'd be picked up a lot for anything and everything I have done to my car... lol
I do 79mph on 64 all the time on my way to and from school and never even get a look from cops. I slow down when I see them though.... sometimes. Guess it depends if I'm in one of those fuck it, he already caught me moods. I took the bike last Saturday and did about 80mph up but got behind a scion who was speeding on the way back. Spent the next 45 minutes cruising between 90mph and 102mph which made it feel like their was a purpose for commuting on a sport bike lol.

I'm with Kaan on this one- used to do just under 10 over or 10 over exacty...since that was the minimum in NJ. Learned my lesson the hard way and got a ticket for 9 over on 81s (only speeding ticket).
Since then I'm hesitant to go 6 or 7 over but lately because I've been doing so much driving I just throw it to 8 over and am alert.
And Matt- I LOVE finding someone whose going quicker than I am to follow and be the bait.
