Joey you are super OCD -- swing by and help me install my aerocatch hood latches!
  Reply
Just install them and slam the hood, then drill through the center of the dent. I don't see what's so complicated. :p

I suppose i could be convinced, although I've been struggling to find the motivation to lift my own car up and check those fluids, it'll take longer to get it on and off the stands than anything else. The possibility of maybe smelling some LS1 exhaust gasses was just too titillating to miss out on.

With an autox sunday, and a back-to-back track NASA weekends; I think I may have to not do anything Saturday car-related, but I am working on it.

That said, while working on the race car last night, I also got a chance to mess with the LS car just a little bit. Old clutch/flywheel is out and new flywheel is in. I also cleaned up the radiator hoses for a better fit, replaced a broken coolant temperature sensor, wired up a resistor in the ABS so no more dash light, and pulled out the broken oil pressure sender (doesnt do anything since I dont have a GM dash, and my BMW oil pressure sender is installed in the block).

Just got to work on it last night. With NASA and some family health issues, I have yet again postponed the date of this thing being done.

Went to replace the pilot bearing last night. A 15 minute job that turned into 3 hours of cursing, throwing tools, drills, giving up, going back to it, hitting with hammer and screwdriver, more drilling, cursing more, hammer more, and a lot more cursing.

The damn pilot bearing came out in 9 pieces, the special pilot bearing tool was worthless. Apparently this is a common issue on LS1s...ugh. New Pilot bearing is in, but that is it....

So I guess you don't need the Dremel then? :? Glad you got it out, but damn, that sounds like a lousy way to spend your evening.

After having such a hellacious yesterday with the pilot bearing, I decided to relax a bit and do wiring. The car had already proved running with no codes so now I could actually start the process of cleaning up the harness; so since the trans was out and intake manifold off, it was the perfect time to depin the ecu and get rid of all the excess wiring.

GM's ECU plugs are stupid easy to depin, they do not even require a depin tool. Halfway through:

[Image: 10291222_10101684402635489_1273817974401605843_n.jpg]

At about the halfway through point, my back is starting to hurt from leaning over (I have back issues). So I decide, what the hell, get to work on the trans a bit. After dropping the passenger side exhaust header, the bellhousing finally popped off enough to put the clutch and flywheel in. Woohoo!

After doing a bit more wiring before retiring for dinner, this is what my excess wiring bundle looked like:

All this work in the same time as getting one stupid pilot bearing out. 3 hours of brutal intense pain yesterday to 3 hours of smooth install the next day. I Guess these cars can keep us on our toes.

I really actually enjoy wiring, as long as it is not under a dash. (again my back throws a bitch fit).

And hell, it has to be better than 3 hours of cursing, drilling, hammering, breaking a damn pilot bearing. (I am still butthurt about it, so what)

If I had more time, I would just create a new harness, but not in the cards.

Ha, I'm with these guys on relaxing/wiring.

I've only ever installed one pilot bearing, but my only thought was "fuck, I'm glad I don't have to take one of those out." Even with a tool, it just looked like it would be a disaster.

Nice to see the progress!

DJ might strangle me if I mention how easy it is to seat/remove the pilot bearing on a miata flywheel. Put a socket on it, give it a light tap, good to go. 8)

I see both sides of the wiring thing. If I understand what I'm doing, sitting there and stripping wires, soldering and heat shrinking connections and looming stuff together is strangely therapeutic.

If I don't understand what I'm doing and am trying to diagnose an issue or just get something to work, it totally blows.

A little progress made on Sunday. Completed going through the wiring harness and mostly cleaned it all up. My aim was OEM, without spending the money for OEM + that some builds do. After all, it is supposed to be a daily driver, and I don't exactly baby my daily drivers.

It is almost there....again. Recruiting Jake tonight to help me lift in the transmission, and if that goes fast enough, maybe driving it around a bit tonight. Not getting my hopes up too much.
