Help Mikey get to one car

Not a "car" but when it's only 1 inch taller and a couple inches longer than a Crosstrek, and meets your requirements, and wants, and has more power and would be reliable... how about a CRV? I'm sure the interior is "boring".

Speaking from inside our VW-logic-vacuum, I still vote for the sportwagen TDI. Might be a bit on the small side, and its not AWD, but it'll probably give you the best blend of economy, functionality and driving pleasure, assuming a CPO purchase the apparent lack of reliability wouldn't be an issue for the next 5 years. I haven't driven the newer TDIs, hopefully the DSG is the quickshifting GTI version, not the castrated one they put in the Passat 2.5s. If the lack of power got to you, you could always throw a tune on it and give way more torque than a volkswagen should have.
Now: 07 Porsche Cayman S | 18 VW Tiguan

Then: 18 VW GTI Autobahn | 95 BMW M3 | 15 VW GTI SE | 12 Kia Optima SX | 2009 VW GTI | 00 BMW 540i Sport | 90 Mazda Miata | 94 Yamaha FZR600R | 1993 Suzuki GS500E | 2003 BMW 325i | 95 Saab 900S

So, requirements:
- less than 25k
- auto
- bigger than a GTI
- 5-door

Very much want:
- fuel economy
- AWD
- nice interior

Nice to have:
- sportiness
- DSG

This car does not exist. The closest I'm finding are the Subaru Crosstrek and the VM Tiguan.

Maybe this has been said before since this thread is 5 pages long but how bout a new wife? :dunno:

There are some bad ones out there. Why risk it?

Also, CRV is the king of blah. No.

Fear not, it will end that way Tongue

Damn! Didn't know anything about the update since we're shopping used.
When they release AWD, that will be the perfect car for me, but it will be a $30k car and only available new.
Why didn't someone make such a car 2-3 years ago so it is available for what I want to pay now?
Would also dig another few HP.

I know someone who (is the farthest thing from a car person and) hates her Jettagon TDI. She says its the most boring, uninspiring car but ended up with it because she couldn't find another wagon that met her criteria.

So, there's that.

I think I'm going to have to suck it up and handle "boring" for now. I don't really drive much. Money is going to be tighter. Will eventually think about a fun/spare/project car, but for now: buy house, get a car to share, get my bike stable to where I want it, AND THEN buy a fun car. Kids plop in the middle there somewhere and reserve the right to obliterate any remaining items.

Again, perfect world is an A4 Avant. It is exactly the car I want. The world isn't perfect.

There isn't much fun to be had driving on public roads during 99% of your driving. That's all there is to it. A manual trans helps a little, but if it's going to be auto then :finger: it

Not sure I agree. Even staying in the speed limit and not being reckless can be fun in the right car.

That said, I drove a Legacy for five years so I get the practicality above all else thing.

Your car is pretty much the catalyst for me not wanting Subaru (one with less power and softer suspension!). Despite having a good amount of power, that thing was a total snoozefest. I really hated it.

Well true. But a car that gets good fuel economy, is reliable, useful, AWD, automatic, meets current safety standards, and isn't at least $50k? No.

Is there anything that hits those for 50k+?

If you want performance and fuel efficiency, you're really looking at one of those silly diesels, right?

Q5 TDI is the only thing that comes to mind.

I honestly think you're headed the same way with a Jettagon. I bought the Legacy because it met many of the requirements I thought I had, despite it being a pretty boring car. In the end, I didn't really need any of the crap I thought I did. I made some sacrifices on the next car (e.g. AWD) and have a car I enjoy much more. I guess my point is take a serious look at your requirements before settling on boring or else you'll end up with Legacy 2.0.

Can you not find a B8 A4 Avant for $25k?

CPO? Not particularly easy. I'm not touching an A4 without CPO.

Again, I am okay with boring. Priorities have shifted. If 0-60 in 8s and a DSG doesn't do it for me, there's watching my fuel economy gauge bounce around the 40s to keep me entertained.

And yeah, if I'm okay with boring I should not be dismissing Subaru. But... I don't know, there's something intangible that snoozes me instantly when it comes to a Subaru that doesn't have 300hp. And I can't stand their styling so there's that.

Friend is visiting from Seattle with his TSX wagon next week. Should get a good impression of it then.
