ok, I admit it, it was me....I bought Channing's 2002. Now some of you may be asking 'why the hell would you do something like that?' A fair question and I've been asking myself that all along. I think the answer breaks down to 80% I think those cars are cool and hope to enjoy puttering around in it for a while, and 20% to spite Rex and his sound logic.
Went down Saturday and picked it up, great to meet Chan & his family for a bit. We also hit up vmt.org which was pretty cool to see all the old trains...those are some serious machines. Uneventful trip home and the seats made me glad we didn't live farther apart.
I'd really like to get the door fixed and after seeing a photo, realize i need to drop the front bumper and get a front air dam (black section)
Also going to start planning out a suspension refresh with hopefully a modest drop and some larger wheels (read upgrading to 14's from 13's) and see what it'd take to put disk brakes on the rear. Oh yeah, and find a wooden steering wheel that doesn't cost like a grand. (I'm banking on Chan having sorted the mechanicals so i can do fun stuff)
So glad this stayed in the MM family! Equally happy to see it around the burg and hopefully at tons of MM events. Good work Dave. Can I drive please?

Awesome! Oldest car I've yet had the pleasure of piloting - Chan let me drive that thing at the last college a/x Fiesta en Fuego and man, what a throwback machine. Just the way everything felt - the brakes - I understood then why shit-brown was a popular pants color back then. But a ton of fun nonetheless - looking forward to updates!
Yay, glad it's staying in the faMMily
It has two '2002' badges on the back. Chan and I never could theorize why. I drove it at one of the last Burn It Down's in Charlottesville. Super cool car, super slow car, and super entertaining. I think you'll have a lot of fun with it. Should be a great platform to start with.

yeah, the left one is on the chopping block if i'm not going to have a "dark blue 2002" when it's removed.

I'll trade you all the drives you want if I can get on the JP meal plan

also good job buying chans machine That thing was a monster and I was digging the art-deco front design. It'd be cool to see that run down the tracks. Chatted up some of the guys that were working on an engine and he gave us a tour of a bunch of closed cars. Kids had a blast and he mentioned there were a few times a year they run the trains and you can ride for like $3
Woo! So glad its still in the family, love that little car. I was on the phone with my dad trying to get him to buy it when Channing updated his thread to say it was sold.
Looking forward to seeing what direction you take it. I say S2k swap.

It's not even funny how skewed the ratio is of hours owned to hours spent reading on s2000 swaps since I stumbled upon it on 2002faq.
There was a guy in Roanoke selling another 2002 with an s14 engine/trans needing to be installed but sold the engine before i made it down there.
Has anyone put a k series in one yet?

lovely title
The front spoiler seems like a no brainer, especially for the price
And 14s! BALLER!
Good luck with the thing, get it all fixed up so I can buy it back from you in a few years

This is probably accurate.
If you're thinking about putting an F20C or a SR20DET in there, then I'll help. Anything else, and I'll "help".

looking at it now, i noticed i transposed my numbers....my spite level is abnormally high.
yeah, that front lip is worth it for 200, but shipping is another fiddy. anyone going to CA soon and have room for a carry-on?
badge update, took off the right badge last night, no 3m tape to mess with, which was cool, but there are 3 holes in the body for the badge pins, so i guess we're back to your original question of 'what the....?'
i wonder if they put those in during the restore or if there was some other badge that the car originally came with (that just happened to have the same pin spacing as the 2002 badge)
I, too, am glad to see this stay around - I have a soft spot for these things.
Isn't the "right" side (read: passenger) side the correct side? That's where all BMW badges I've seen go.

yeah I don't know what to tell you about the badges, other than yes, it's the right side one that's supposed to be there. :dunno:

was there a cane in the trunk when you bought it?

yeah, you're correct, the driver side was the one i removed, passenger is still on. misspoke earlier, my bad
Then I guess you need an Aplina badge to cover those holes. Or S2000 badge.
How about an MM badge? :dunno: I'd buy one....
You think you're inclined to see if the washers are in the correct way at the top of the front struts? I'll be really curious to know if that ends up being why the steering was so heavy. However, I always considered it a bouns. Free work out, wife won't drive it, carjacker would be like "WTF man nevermind".
