Official MM Ski / Snowboard thread

Been snowboarding since I was 15, used to ride with the guys on the JMU ski team which was fun because skiiers always push you to ride harder and faster because they are, well, faster. I haven't ridden in years, just haven't been anywhere close to a resort, had the time, or wanted to take the time off to do it. I have a Rossi 148 with the ORIGINAL K2 clickers! I'd love to go again some time but living in the south has made me a complete pussy in the cold and if I'm taking time off I'm going somewhere warm not to a snow-covered mountain.

its a fine board, in good shape with straight sharp edges and no gouges in the base. you probably want to ditch the bindings though, i dont think boots are made for them anymore (unless i can find my old boots too)

I'll be back up there for Turducken. It's mine!

turducken so isn't ever gonna happen.

Just tried skiing again this past week with the GF, she had gotten me a nights stay as a christmas present, it was my first time in 8 years. Loved it, never really considered snowboarding as i feel like you'd fall on your back a lot and my back is pretty shit. Anyway, i've really only been in the northeast, Okemo, Killington, Blue Mtn etc.

On a side note, gf had never been skiing and i had her going down trails after an hour and 15 minutes. Apparently i'm a decent teacher.

Just got back from Mt Baker (2.5 hours from Seattle).

This place was mfn' awesome. Got about 24 inches of new snow while we were riding there resulting in a base of over 100 inches from top to bottom. I've never ridden powder conditions like that in my life. It was actually kinda hard at first because I wasn't used to riding with my weight on the back foot to keep the tip up.

Mt Baker itself is about a medium-sized resort, with probably the best ski lodge food I've ever had by a good margin. The nearby town is called Glacier but it is well and truly tiny. Not a lot of lodging to be found there. There isn't any night life to speak of so it's not a party spot but if you want to attack the mountain it fits the bill. Apparently it gets the most snow in the contiguous United States.

I'd say it's not a particularly good mountain for beginners because there aren't many green runs but on the other hand there's so much powder that falling doesn't usually hurt. For advanced people there's plenty of cool sidecountry/backcountry paths to take, but with so much snow there's a high risk of avalanches. Some spots they won't let you go out of bounds without a beacon.

One thing that is really surprising about Mt Baker is that the lift lines are really short. Only on Sunday did we have to wait more than 5 minutes to get on a lift, on the other days usually there'd only be 3 or less groups of people in front of us when we got to the bottom of a lift. Even more surprising considering that lift tickets were $52.

Unfortunately my weekend got cut short, because on the last day I failed to land a jump and sprained my MCL. The tip of the board dug in and bent my knee sideways. Got a knee brace on right now, probably won't be able to ride for 3 weeks =/

Jealous, I hit up whitetail last weekend for fun and it was surprisingly "good" on the left and right sides of the trial for whitetail. Headed to Round Top or Liberty Sunday and then will be trying out Stowe, VT for the first time February 3-6th.

Shame we couldn't get a meet up worked out G, but it sounds like you had a great time.

I get the impression there are so many places around here that places are rarely PACKED. You may have also benefited from the forecast/falling of snow in Seattle this weekend. Most people do day trips to places around here because lodging is so week and I'm thinking they were afraid of travel.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

You might be on to something there. I don't know how many rooms were available in Glacier but I have to think that it's only maybe 100-200 tops. So to go to Mt Baker you're either staying in Glacier, or an hour and a half away in Bellingham. I think Mt Baker has a reputation as not being for noobs, and Crystal Mountain and Steven's Pass are a bit closer to Seattle. One of the locals was telling us that Crystal Mountain tends to be way more packed than Baker.

I guess next time I get out that way I might try the other resorts for a day or two, depending on whether I have the time.

Who would be interested in doing an MM weekend in WV somewhere? With 10-15 you can get pretty reasonable costs for renting a cabin/ski house etc. Canaan valley has some great rental areas, and is fairly convenient for a weekend trip.

Interest?

I also have some connections in Deep Creek, so if anyone wants to do the Wisp, I could make a few calls.

Where were you at Whitetail when we tried to join up with you  Ill admit we were a little off, drinking from 7 am just had us chilling and laughing too much on the slopes to do any real skiing.

Sounds awesome G. Lots of powdery steeps, no lift lines and good food, that's about perfect. Sucks about the knee though...

We spent the last two weekends at Bryce, and like DJ said, very good snow down the edges. Took a major step forward in being able to do more trips - got one kid doing the lift now. One down, one to go. I really need to make some more progress with the fitness though, I was pushing really hard and my legs were burning at the bottom, pretty sad for 500 vertical.

I'm thinking about doing a NASTAR race next time we go. They were setting up the gates during our last few runs and really wanted to hit them. I haven't done it years, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

Hell yeah
Haven't had any riding like that yet this season... I'm heading out west over spring break though so we'll see how things turn out. Having a snowshoe pass this year has been one of the best decisions I've made. The park has been on point and all the snow we've missed, they've been getting. I was up at Mountain Creek, NJ this on Saturday and looks like they've been as hard pressed for snow as we have (although the runs are a lot longer and the park blew my mind). We also hosted a Red Bull Rivals event and I personally had to make sure the Dukes brought home the W. Hit me up anytime you all are in town and want to ride or if you need a halfway house on the way to snowshoe.
