I think this sort of thing is neat, so figured I'd re-post for other BMW owners to peruse. I found the way to access the full options list for your car, including build date.
To do this, click on this link (have pop-ups disabled) and then click the "Electronic Parts Catalogue" link on the right side of the page.
The user name is eu111111 and password is bmwetk1. Click Login, and then enter the last 7 of your VIN in the box at the top of the page. Hit Enter. There's an "Options" link that will show up at the very top of the page. Click that, and then you can expand all the fields that pop up to see your build date, car info, and options.
