well there we go.
I have more free time now
Bruce should be gone, and hopefully michal "2 in 30 secods" neuvirth will be too. I am sick and tired of the neuvirth apologetics. he is and always has been a below average goalie, and he played like it.

Oh for fuck's sake, Evan.
We don't even make the playoffs for 3 fucking seasons straight, and now everyone is calling for the head of the guy who took us there 4 years in a row. (Which, by the way, hasn't happened since the 90's) Complete bullshit. Let's not pretend that Tampa Bay is some podunk pond hockey team either.
We were outplayed. I don't know if it was cockiness or injury or what, but the Stamkos/Lecavalier/St. Louis was like a bunch of psychics. Our Alex/Alex/Niklas combo did precisely dick for us, and despite their goalie giving up HUGE rebounds, Knuble & Co were nowhere to be found near the puck. The Capitals did NOT play the same hockey they played against the Rangers, while Tampa Bay played probably the best hockey they've played all season. We didn't score first, didn't maintain momentum, and yes, our goaltender is 23 years old, and he plays like it. He'll get better, but who would you rather see?
I swear, I hear nothing but this crap from Caps fans. 'Fire Bruce, fire Green, fire Neuvirth, fire Semin'. Let's just fire the whole team and start over, because that worked awesome in 2002 when we bought a bunch of talent and won the Sta...lost to the Lightning in the first round.
Tampa Bay just wanted it worse than we did, simple as that. It's the team's fault as a whole, I don't believe there was one single element you can point to and say 'here is where we sucked, if we fixed that we'd have won'.

From a non-fan who loves hockey perspective:
Keep Bruce - funny that making the playoffs 3 years straight isn't good enough (typical DC)
Dump Neuvirth - he really isn't that good; way too many rebounds
Need more defense - Green is not a DEFENSEman and Shultz?
The Caps get tired, plain and simple. All their seasons are a bell curve of awesome and this one was no exception. They just seem to get tired and stop playing well. Maybe this is coaching, but there's only so much the guy can do. At some point, the players have to push through the pain and win for the other guy. Maybe I'm biased, but I didn't see any of that.

Making the playoffs is irrelevant. You think he should keep his job just because the team is barely better than half of the league? Thats a great recipe for mediocrity.
A coach is evaluated on how well a team plays in relation to their talent. You should know this.
The capitals have enough talent to win the stanley cup for at least the last 2 years, and they repeatedly underperform. Embarrassingly underperform.
Tampa Bay didnt even make the playoffs last year, and after 4 playoffs in a row the capitals still cant do squat.

So everyone but the Pens & Sharks need to fire their coaches? :dunno:
Oh wait, the Blackhawks AKA 2010 Stanley Cup Champions "didnt even make the playoffs" in 2009.

lolwut?
Performance vs. talent. Its a simple equation Rex.
Evan Wrote:Performance vs. talent. Its a simple equation Rex.
And I'm telling you, it's nowhere near that simple, hence my blackhawks example. But whatever.
Your plan is infallible:
Step 1: Fire Bruce Boudreau
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Win Stanley Cup.
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
since this seems to be the language you speak in
Step 1: Keep Boudreau
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Lose more playoff series
That's hardly fair. Sure, there are some steps that need to be taken. Yes, Bruce needs to understand that at a minimum next year barring tragedy the Capitals should at least take the East, if not the Cup.
But ffs, the man got us the first President's Trophy in franchise history. I realize it's not the Stanley cup but it's not like Bruce took a dump on center ice.

listening to his tone during the press conference after the buffalo game he knew he was toast. Getting lit up by half of an AHL team means you lost the team.
I know I called for canning bruce at the end of last season, but Im not excited about this move. firing a coach is half of the equation, you need a better coach to fill the spot. Why would a junior hockey coach be any better than an AHL coach? The caps need a cup winning coach, if nothing else for the respect that he would demand from the players who look like primadonnas after refusing to work for budreau
But. But. Dale Hunter!

Junior hockey is a pretty big deal in Canada - think big east basketball (except in a place where there is only one sport). I think that's at least as good as a guy who's coached a group of career minor leaguers...especially given how much the players are reported to respect Hunter (heck Carlson and Wideman played for him in the OHL and seem to welcome his style). The team just needs someone to get them motivated and working hard and it seems like that's exactly what Hunter can do.
Not saying its going to work - but the writing was on the wall with Bruce...he had a great run and did a great job, but he just lost the team this year. Time to give someone else a shot and why not Hunter I guess.

So.
The Caps made it to the playoffs by the skin of their teeth. But "a win's a win", and here they are.
Thoughts?

Its hard to comment when its impossible to tell which Caps team will show up.
Caps play the bruins hard and definitely have it within them to take the series, even in 5 or 6 games.
who knows if they actually do this.
either way, I wont be heartbroken if they lose (fan blasphemy!) as it should make Hunter (and maybe mcphee) easier to fire.
Which really really really needs to happen. Even making the playoffs this year has happened despite Hunter, not due to him. He is outmatched, over his head, and has no clue how to coach an NHL team.
slightly funneh, I saw this pic on wapo today. look in the background at former cap Tomas Fleischmann
