Project 2006 STi
#1
I finally decided it was time to make a project thread for the new Scooby since the project forum seems to be getting over populated with Miatas and M3s these days and I figure a little more variety wouldn't hurt.

Some of you guys knew it was time to finally step up to the big leagues from the WRX and I had been looking for an Sti for some time now. I searched for a couple of months and was about to go down to Atlanta to pick one up and stumbled across this one on Craigslist. It was exactly what I was looking for and was 2 miles from my house. So, we struck up a deal and I couldn't be happier.

Specs:
2006 54k on the clock
1 previous owner (a mature owner at that)
Garage kept

Quick rundown of the noteworthy mods-

Engine:
Cobb APv2 protuned by EFI Logics - 298whp/329wtq in 5th gear on a DynaPack
APS full 3ÔÇØ catted TBE
SPT intake
AMR TMIC

Suspension/brake:
Prodrive lowering springs
24mm Whiteline adjustable swaybars
Kartboy endlinks
Whiteline strut braces
Hawk HPS pads

Wheels/tires:
Stock silver BBS - Pirelli Winter Carving
18x8.5 Prodrive GT1 anthracite - Star Specs

A few crappy pics from the seller's ad

Autox at Verona less than 24 hours after picking the car up from the seller

Plans:
Lots of autocross and to have an extremely fun and enjoyable DD, maybe a few hyperdrives in the fall. Looking to do forged pistons and big snail in the next couple months hopefully.

Congrats!! looks awesome, definitely needs some more static negative camber from that photo, will help extend the life of those tires.

There are so many cars I want, STis, Evos, s2000s, corvettes, ugh, and thats definitely the color id get in STi.

I have always had a really soft spot for Subaru. If I was ever going to own an Asian imported car It would probably be a WRX. Either a bugeye or the 2.5 RS that came before that model change with a WRX swap.

If you're still in town let me know man, you definitely need to take it for a spin.

I sold the WRX to a local guy here in Roanoke that plans on AXing it with BRR. So, sounds like it went to a good home and it will be certainly be put to good use.

I changed the rear diff fluid and thats gotten rid of 90% of the binding when turning. From what I read, I think some is pretty normal, so I doubt i'll worry about it unless it gets worse again.

DJ - I see what you mean about the camber. Whats a good number to run for a street/autox setup like mine without killing the inside of the tire?

have you looked into the "free caster mod" (flipping the rear bushing mount on the front lower control arm)? if anything caster makes as much or more of an impact on these chassis than camber. what's your toe-in right now?

I've actually never heard of that. Might be worth looking into for sure. I do need to get it aligned though, I'm not sure when the last time it was done, if ever.

give it a look. its cheap (very!), not difficult, and if you need to get it aligned anyway, its a good time to do it. its basically just a cheap way to substitute an anti-lift kit i.e. aftermarket lower control arm rear bushing that gains caster. or, just buy an anti-lift kit from Whiteline or whoever, and enjoy the stiffer bushing while you're at it.

(i wouldn't add that spacer the OP did, though)

i run maxed stock camber via the camber bolts (like....-1.5 wooooo  ) but with 0 toe all around, my tire wear has been awesome. i do alot of highway driving though.

here's some reading on improving the STi's steering axis inclination geometry with better caster, due to the poor camber curve. for autocross where you're looking at big steering inputs where caster really comes into play, this may be something helpful. i'm not up to speed on the auto-x classing rules though, so you may not be able to make use of much of this without being bumped.

More caster is good up to a limit, most stock cars you try to max out caster and camber. All depends on the driving you do. I do so little highway driving and so much autox and racing with the M3 when it was still street driveable that I had reverse cambewr wear (wearing outside edges) even with -3 degrees of front camber.

So I should be fine telling the shop when I get it aligned to go with max camber and caster and 0 toe?

I do some highway driving to and from AX events and some for work. But, I'm trying to pick up a comfy DD in the next few weeks to help cut down on the work travel in the Sti.

yes, mostly because there's so little camber to be had that maxing out what you have will at least help a little. you will probably only be able to get 1 degree out of either end of the car. zero the toe on all 4 corners and you'll see much less wear.

i don't think there's any way to adjust caster from the factory. You'll need camber plates, offset bushings, or different control arms for that.
