I was supposed to make $3975 this week...

and instead I made $1141.07 thanks to back charges. 95% of which had nothing at all to do with me.

Commissioned positions suck. Anyone's company hiring good sales people?!

Oh yeah, I get to pay for all my own travel / car / insurance expenses too Sad

Sorry just venting. You need to have a thick skin and a lot of faith to do what I do.

So, having never worked in sales, what exactly constitutes a back charge?

Sure, if you want to take on my bills for this month too Tongue

I don't put personal stuff out there very much, but this was really frustrating to me (especially on the week of my birthday) because I was counting on that money coming in.

John, back charges aren't exclusive to every sales position out there, but throughout every industry there is usually a variant of them in some form. The purpose is to keep the company from getting screwed on their margins due to salesperson error or contract cancellation (the legal kind).

I'm not short sighted like some salespeople who say "well hey, they're a huge company and I'm the little guy driving business for them, they can afford the mistakes I can't"...I mean I legitimately understand why companies do this and I do think it's fair when it's warranted. However, in this case, I am getting back charged for mistakes that happened last year.

The company I work for is a branch of a nationwide company that two of my friends opened here in Charlotte. It is a great company to work for and I love working for my friends. However, a lot of the pricing that we do for our products was, at first, pretty much trial and error when it came to the details of our installations. Our national trainer didn't really spend much time with us on pricing which, in sales, is kind of important. So the mistakes I made were because I wasn't given the knowledge I needed...I just flat out didn't know.

Well now I know and I don't make those mistakes. My friends / bosses weren't going to penalize me for them because they didn't know about them either. Apparently corporate had a different idea and decided to just withhold all of it from my last paycheck. Ok, so I'm upset about that and I can sort of understand why this was done even though I question the fairness of it. But, on to the next part.

There are costly uncertainties in the installation of our products that even as an expert I will never know about until the actual installation occurs. This my friends, is fucked up. I'm sorry. I get back charged for stuff that is visually impossible to see in many cases. I can find no level of fairness in this part.

The worst part (and about 50% of this last back charge) deals with cancellations. Just like most big purchases, our contracts have a 3 day grace period in which you can back out for any reason without penalty. After that, you're locked in...you face a law suit if you back out. Well, one of my clients decided to back out a few weeks after his grace period like an asshole and the management decided that it wouldn't be worth the time / effort / money / press to go after him. So what should have been money in my bank is now basically just a floated loan. This is the black hole of fairness, where nothing including light can escape.

It's not like I'm making $200k, I mean I do pretty well averaged out over the year and I am very blessed to be where I am, but in a commissioned sales role you learn to count on those big weeks / months to pull you through the slow times where you don't generate as much business. It's a game of averages. I worked my ass off to get this one huge sale, the biggest our corporation has ever had on the east coast, and my commission was reduced to literally nothing thanks to this bullshit.

Just had to vent sorry guys. It's definitely soured my birthday week already. And I'm going to have to cut my early birthday golf round tomorrow short so I can run a few more deals and hopefully recuperate Sad

Ditto, good luck! Hopefully it startsr picking up with this nicer weather. I thought you were in real estate? I know my uncle said the market in Charlotte took a huge dump and he was lucky that all his rental properties were rented out so he had at least a steady income for the time being. Does Nationwide do real estate? How is the market doing down there now?

Thanks guys. No I haven't been in real estate since I left VA years ago. I have a couple of friends down here in real estate though and they're doing ok. It's slow but steady. One of my friends is killing it right now because he deals mostly in foreclosures...still a very hot market.
