How bout them skins?

point 6 is crucial, Mike.
But point 7 is "Why did we make such a huge deal about Vick's dogfighting, send the guy off to 3 years in jail, strip him of all his money but yet continue to watch football?"

The cool part about Gladwell's writing is that it's not moralistic. It just poses the question and the reader takes it from there.

Did you read the article and are you familiar with Gladwell's books? The idea of choice isn't as rational nor as reasonable as we assume. That's neither here nor there.

The question of the article is more about two activities that mortally damages living creatures but one activity violates American societal norms and the other doesn't. Gladwell just asks why that is. He doesn't attempt to answer; he just poses the question.

My comment proposes one possible reason why society accepts one and not the other. I thought maybe you posted as a discussion piece for commentary per:

Yes I did, no I'm not. Why do you ask?

Of course, its par for the course in a magazine whose readership masturbates to stories that make them feel superior to the unwashed masses.

(never mind the complete logical fallacy of equivalizing the 2)

Oh Evan, I was waiting for you. Malcolm Gladwell loves sports and is actually quite sports saavy as witnessed by his exchange with ESPN's Bill Simmons.

The "football player has a choice" theory is so obvious and so instinctual that most folks believe it without questioning it. Just throwing that out there.

Second, your comment about the new yorker is brilliant. It attacks the magazine, the readers and makes wholesale assumptions that you believe to be so obvious that it has to be true. You should read some of his books Evan. It's all about the perception of choice, our decision making process and the fallacy of commonly held assumptions.

I'm pretty sure Evan wouldn't make it past the first chapter of any of Gladwell's book before dismissing them as hippy touchy-feely bullshit.

I really don't think they'll get rid of him mid-season... but what do I know.

He's 10-12, which is a pretty good record when you look at some other crappy teams.

Well, you don't make the decisions so what you care about doesn't really matter.

So can we take the title as the worst team in the league yet? There's no prize for 2nd worst, so if you're that bad, you might as well have some sort of notoriety.

Titans are a big disappointment, but the Skins would still get crushed by them.

Browns, agree are terrible, but at least they can put up more than field goals in a game. Can we do that?

Rams? Yes, we beat them with the home field advantage (not to mention one of the biggest fan bases in the NFL) - but a win by only 2 points given our home field advantage isn't a win. Hell, we lost to them last year...

I still contend we're the worst team in the league. Then again, that's partially me sticking to the point that if you're going to be awful, you might as well be the worst. At least that way you get some attention and people actually start to pity you...

If you can't score a touchdown against the worst defense in the league, then you have the worst offense in the league.

The Skins defense is really not that bad, which is why I would say they are not the #1 worst overall team in the league.
