No longer onyachin.
For a long time I went without a virus scanner until a few years ago I discovered AVG. Its lightweight, unobtrusive and free. No reason at all not to use it although like mentioned before using your brain should keep you safe.
Mcaffee, Norton and all the others I have used have been expensive bloated resource hogging piles of shit. (Although supposedly they just revamped Norton and its good)
I haven't used one in 3 years but after re-imaging both my parent's computers, I see the value in them. I need to get them AVG so I don't have to save them from themselves any more.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

i've never used a virus app in my ~25 years of using a pc.
when i was young, i had a hard drive wiped completely clean by a trojan.
when i was in college i got a weak virus that i was able to kill myself.
just a few weeks ago i got another that was a bit of a pain, but i eventually wiped it out.
i download a lot of porn and illegal software. common sense rules the day... each time i've gotten something, i had a momentary lack in judgment.
i don't understand how regular computer users can be so stupid to get viruses... if you're not "hacking" and dealing with apps that can be seriously tricky, there is no excuse.
I really disagree with this - there are a lot of sites that appear to be legitimate but will try to backdoor things onto your system using javascript / other dynamic scripting languages. Music lyrics sites are one of the main offenders. Even fully patched Firefox (which seems to have closed a lot of issues since the 2.0 days) and IE8 installs can fall prey to these attacks.
I will agree that it's safe to not use any AV software if you don't surf the internet with Javascript / Java applets enabled though.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.
