i'm paid very well, i like my job, i like the company, i like having a 5 minute bike ride... i can be perfectly fine with the company being smart... not too many small software companies have been alive since the 80s. i dig that kind of security.

im not saying for you to get a new job, im just saying that job jumping in this area isnt a huge risk in this economy, at least in the tech / gubment contracting industry.

uhh..yeah, im serious. There are jobs galore in certain sectors. If you're into security, I don't know why you'd be with any small software company. You can get paid just as well at a big one, and have more flexibility once you get there.

I think the point Mike is trying to make is that job jumping doesn't do anything but get you more money... and that ultimately he likes pretty much everything about his job so he doesn't want to do it. It's not always about making the most money you possibly can. Most people would kill to have a job they enjoy (for whatever reason) and we don't all want to end up being unhappy job jumpers like RJ. I was just saying it's not all doom and gloom. Any of us in this area can probably find a new job within 2 weeks, and likely be making more than where we are now.

Just as a side point for working for a big company..if you enjoy your pay level, etc etc, and just want to find new job types, big companies usually allow internal transfer pretty easily. For my company, you can work on a project for a year (and even that amount of time is just a guideline, not a rule) and jump to something else pretty easily after some paperwork transfers.

RJ was just saying that he didn't get a raise.. that's all, really. His situation isn't really all doom and gloom, so everyones like "what? Why look for a new job just over this one thing?"

I would say so. No raise is actually like getting your pay docked. Certainly worth switching companies for.

While no raise is akin to having your real income reduced by inflation, what everybody is trying to point out is that ultimately wage is not the be-all-end-all.

I know that RJs living siatuation is likely to change in the next 8 months.. which, were he to change jobs, would likely mean a very short tenure with at the new office. Among other things, it wouldn't look so hot on his resume.

"Why were you only at this office for 8 months?"
"I moved."
"Were you planning on moving prior?"
"Yes"
"So why did you change jobs so shortly before hand?"
"They weren't paying me enuogh."

Not necessarily the guy I'd want to hire. There are a myriad of other reasons not to change, as well. Mikey is a great example. Due to non-performance related factors, I didn't receive a raise last year, and I'm quite happy I stayed within the company. Money is not the only reason to make one choice over another... and even if it is for you, your view is not Righter than anybody else's.

Hasn't seemed to work for RJ.

There are so many reasons NOT to like a job, I've realized you have a FAR greater chance of liking your new one just the same or less.

I've been with my company over 2 years now. A new record!

If things work out later this year I guess I will be with them at least another year longer... and I wont have any old busted vehicles pretty soon! This has to be worse than crossing the streams.

Well, aside from picking silly fights with Deersty, I'm back on track.

I had a positive review and they're not looking for a reason to can me. My raise puts me slightly above [normal condition economiy] inflation, which I'm happy to get right now, given the industry I'm in.

I can't stand working for big companies. It makes you realize that ultimately they don't give a shit about you, and there are a ton of people above you that are making WAY more than you are. They pay the 95% of the people below them the 40-85k / year they are accustomed to and those people are happy with it because they have enough to pay the bills with a little extra to store away.

The problem with big companies is that they rarely pay you what you are worth. This is what attracted me to sales in the first place. Wink
