EGT Probe question: DJ, Pete, anyone?
#1
I have an autometere EGT gauge on the Daytona. I realized today that it is going to be a bitch to get a hoze on the outlet of the turbo because it sticks way out in the way. It has a 90degree bend in it, can I increase this bend or bend it back toward the manifold more?

I've never disassembled one but I imagine that all that is inside of that tube is a flexible wire. The metal tube jacket is likely hardened heat treated steel and it's only there to guard against the heat. So, I doubt you will damage anything internally, but you might crack the tube. Bend it slowly and see how it feels. If it is really stiff and unwilling to bend, proceed with caution. If it bends easily, you'll be fine.

I wonder if autometer will be able to help me. I might shoot them an e-mail and see what they say. I can make it work as it is but it is so close to the outlet of the turbo it will be a real pain in the ass.

I just looked at mine as a reference. It's a VDO but I think it's basically the same. I bent mine and it didn't break :-).

I think you're good to go.

Hmm, I'd be careful here. You're not dealing with straight metal, you're dealing with a wire that transmits current from a thermocouple. If all he was bending was the outer jacket (With nothing inside of it) heat would probably work fine.

Another caution with heat that it often makes metal more brittle when the metal is taken to a glowing state. Depends on the metal, how it was tempered/anieled, etc, of course.

I think for this application, bend it and get it over with. If it feels really resistant or it's not bending evenly, stop and go to plan B.

Not so simple. I had to built out a weld to get the probe out away from the wall of the manifold. So its not the normal tapped hole. I'm pretty sure its goin to break off after it heat cycles anyway, but it looks good now so I'm going to take a chance. It might result in me pulling the head in a week but whatever.

There is a thread about this. let me search.

show me pics... we might be able to figure out a better way to install it. I'm assuming its not a cast manifold?

Oh yes...its cast. Which is why I think the weld is going to break off. I have had people tell me both ways. I'm trying to find pictures online (I know I posted about this before) but I'm coming up nothing. Let me run back and snap some.

Wink you know you should "bake" the manifold and weld it while its HOT right? depending on how good the cast is and the quality of metal they used, you might get away with it.

Plumbers use spring pipe benders that slip over the tubing to be bent and keeps the tube from crimping (and breaking) during the bend. I'd use a little one over the piece to be bent on the EGT as added insurance.

I've got some if you need them - Rex could pick them up and bring 'em to you on his next tip, probably.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

Ok here are some pics. One of our body shop guys works for a Craftsman truck team. I had him look at it and he said it would be ok. Its mig on cast.

If anyone wants to weigh in go ahead. I had to make due with what I had and the manifold had like a 1/2in NPT hole tapped in it when I got it. So I needed a much smaller tap at an angle. This is how I got there.

i didn't mean glowing heat... yeah, there;s a wire in there... that's bad. was more thinking blow dryer heat.
