Official MM Firearms Thread
#1
Since we seem to go OT into guns every now and then in other threads I thought it was high time we had an official thread.

My question is, what is the current deal with assault weapons? Since the ban expired am I now allowed to buy full auto or burst fire weapons with collapsible stocks, silencers, muzzle-flash suppression and all the goodies? If so, I kinda wanted a M4. Or would I have to buy a semi-auto M4 then retrofit it to get burst or full auto fire?

No, the brady bill was just a limit on the amount of rounds that could be loaded in a magazine. it was a 'feel good' bill but didnt actually do anything, which is why it was let expire.
edit: looks like it also did cover flash suppresors, pistol grips, and collapsible stocks so you can do those now.

Full auto rifles are still illegal except in very difficult, expensive and lengthy licensing process.

im sure the gun guys here know more details

If you modify an M4 for burst/auto without a class 3 weapons permit, you are going to get in deep deep trouble. Smile

Hell the army doesnt even use full auto anymore...

Scilencers also require a permit. I'm not sure if they fall under the class 3, but stocks and flash supressors dont require anything but a wrench Wink

Im far from an expert but you better be willing to open up your wallet if you want a fully auto/burst m16/ar15 (Im talking somewhere around $20k). Im fairly certain full auto m4s arent available to civilians since they were produced long after the ban started.

But yes you can pick up a semi auto m4 for about $800-900. Collapsible stocks Im not sure on. I know my dad has one on his m4 but he uses it on duty so that could be his excuse. Im pretty sure they are fine atleast in Virginia. 30 round mags are okay in Virginia also.

stagarms makes pretty good m4s. Im not sure about how good their prices are though.

Id just go to a gun show and look around and compare prices. Its a lot of fun also. Its a good time to buy guns especially if it looks like Obama will be elected. We would very likely see another assault rifle ban. Or atleast make us use 10 round magazines or some gay shit.

And no you cant modify your semi m4. Atleast legally. And if you ever get caught, you better be prepared to go to jail for a long time because the federal govt doesnt fuck around with modifying guns to full auto.

is there any advantage of an M4 over an AR15?

The only part that must have been produced before the ban is the auto-seer. That auto-seer can be used in any compatible gun.

I've got a collapsible stock on my M4, straight from the factory.

Yes. A long time. That being said, apparently there are plans floating around the interweb for milling your own parts.

Im pretty sure an ar15 is simply the civilian version of an m16. An m4 is more compact. Thats about it. I think m4s look prettier also.

Hmm, looks like a major opportunity for profit. Buy a bunch of guns, wait for new assault weapon ban....PROFIT!!!

Actually now that I think about it, I remember seeing a news story about a dude whose M16-style rifle fired a burst at a firing range and he ended up getting a friendly visit from the ATF. He tried to say it malfunctioned but I think he ended up going to jail. Oh well, guess I'll have to become a cop if I want cool guns =/

Yeah my brother just bought a shit load of m4 receivers (Im talking hundreds). He could turn around and sell them now for a profit since he got such a good deal on them but he is going to wait. There is money to be made if you have the cash sitting around to blow on a small arsenal and sit on it for years. It helps if you know the right people also.

Hell, its looking to be a better investment than the stock market right now.

The M4 is an M16 with a collapsible stock, a shorter overall length, and a shorter barrel. A "M16 Carbine" if you will.

But the receivers, the triggers, and almost all parts interchange.

As you guys have mentioned already, Full-Auto and burst fire weapons are controlled under the National Firearms Act of 1934, which restricted the ownership of full-auto firearms (but did not forbid it.) Later, the Firearm Owners' Protection Act in 1986 had a clause banning new fully automatic firearm sales except to Law Enforcement Agencies and the military. There was some controversy to this as the vote to add this amendment was an unrecorded voice vote that happened at night.

So.

Machineguns manufactured before the '86 are legally transferable to private individuals as long as that individual pays the appropriate transfer tax and passes a federal background check. The problem is that there aren't any new ones being made to sell to private individuals, which makes "transferable machine guns" absurdly rare and expensive.

However.

Shoulder-fired full auto is kind of stupid. It's a good way to waste ammo, but that's about it. The military has learned this lesson which is why the M4 has three-round burst only.

Now.

All the "features" that were banned in the Clinton Dumb-Ass Gun Ban of 1994 are now legal in many states, including Virginia. These features include: Threaded barrels, flash hiders, bayonet lugs, "high capacity" detachable magazines, pistol grips, folding or telescoping stocks, rifle-grenade launchers, etc. They're still illegal in some states though, such as Maryland, California, New York, Massachusetts, and others.

But basically, all the "cool guns" are totally legal and available, just in semi-auto only, which is far from a deal breaker for me. Smile

One other restriction you should be aware of is the 922r regulations, which mandate that any firearm assembled from a "parts kit" (a gun with it's receiver cut and, as of 2005, it's barrel cut and welded) that would be illegal (a machine gun) in it's stock form must be assembled with a minimum number of US-Made parts, or is illegal. I don't know how these US-made parts (such as magazine floorplates, trigger groups, pistol grips, bolts, gas pistons) make guns safer, but they must "protect the children" somehow, amirite?

I'm gangsta... i'm a Glock fan boy... i'll admit it. Once the AR is done I'll probably just look into reloading... i'll be done with the firearms i feel i "need."
