I think perhaps recording in 720p is the greatest leap forward. I thought Live View was the coolest thing but now video? What will they think of next? I was planning an upgrade to a D300 and the only thing keeping me from going to this instead is the switch over to SD.

Sample video: http://www.vimeo.com/1612204?pg=embed&sec=1612204&hd=1

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Canon 50D just released. Along with a 18-200 IS lens, (which was the only real reason to own a Nikon...)

New 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor with improved noise reduction, wide range ISO 100-3200 (H1: 6400, H2: 12800), 14-bit conversion for smooth color tones and gradations.

Next generation DIGIC 4 Image Processor for faster processing, 6.3 fps up to 90 JPEGS using UDMA CF cards; 60 consecutive JPEGS or 16 RAW using standard CF cards.

3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection.

Enhanced Live View shooting includes Face Detection Live mode.

9 cross-type high-precision sensors for accurate target subject acquisition and diagonal center cross-type AF point with f/2.8 and faster lenses.

New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting to automatically even the brightness across the image.

Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System with a fluorine coating for better resistance to dust.

Creative Auto goes a step beyond full auto with on screen setting display.

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output for displaying full high-resolution images on a High Definition TV.

Difference is I'm upgrading after 4 years when I understand how to use all my cameras functions and how they're holding me back. I already take good pictures, so I don't have to worry about that. Tongue

Evan, I think Nikon is using the video mode to 1up Canon... or at least try. Of course I'm partial but I think it might work in this market sector. There are a lot of people who think they're professionals taking vacation and family photos that would also like to take HD video. Rather than carry two equipments around, you can just carry this. It goes back to my old thread about wanting a video camera but not wanting to carry both around.

Of course, being a Canon fanboi, I want to dismiss the video stuff as a gimmick and say if I wanted a video camera Id carry around a cheap 1080p aiptek, but I admit, the video thing is cool.
Before even Nikon announced they would do video on theirs I wondered why Canon hadnt done it. If the camera already has live view, then its just a matter of adding one of the cheap h264 encoder chips to the camera.

I admit Im a little dissapointed with the 50D, its still a great camera but only slightly better than the 40D (That only came out a year ago) and I dont buy into the megapixel battle. Just means I have to buy bigger memory cards (And people say more noise).

A comment on Engadget said that they thought it was because Canon didn't want to cannibalize their camcorder sales... and that kinda makes sense to me. Nikon doesn't make camcorders and I could see Canon originally deciding not to do it. Of course now they have to or risk losing a piece of the market to Nikon.

FWIW, I also read the D90 was not h264 so we're not there yet.

Did you use a previous version? I do everything with Lightroom now, but is it worth the $100 upgrade?

To be clear, I don't think any upgrade is worth $100. That said, judging from the feature list I posted above... I don't think so.

What are the benefits of using Lightroom over Photoshop?

You can quickly and easily process a whole batch of pictures, compared to only doing one by one in photoshop. Lightroom has just the features for photography-- tone, curves, etc with none of the crazy photoshop extras.

Heres a screenshot-- you can see you can easily scroll through all your pictures and duplicate editing on multiple pictures. its great!

It's infinitely better at post-processing.

You can use the batch conversion tools or a script in Photoshop when going from Raw to resized JPEGs. Does look cool though - I'll have to try it out.

RAW FTMFW. So much easier to get a solid looking picture.

Lightroom isnt a substitute for getting it right in the camera - and it decreases the processing time too.

Agreed. However where I used to agonize over white balance settings previously I now shoot in RAW. You can't really "make a picture more interesting" in Lightroom and that's what you have to really get right in the camera. I want to shoot the scene as it looks and adjust in the development... like film.
