How much riding expieriance do you have? dirtbikes?

Everyone else on this forums will know you better than me and be able to give good advice on what bike will fits you. But i'll just tell you what i've learned about starter bikes since getting my first bike last september.

First and formost your first bike will very likely get beat up. All noobs make mistakes, thats the way it is. So why bother getting a bike with all kinds of pretty bodywork? Nakeds are much more crash resistant, more so if you have case gaurds and sliders on it.

Secondly sportbikes are alot of motorcycle, i dont care if its a 10 year old bike. Maybe some on here will disagree with me, and maybe your that 1 in 100 that can ride a sportbike as a firstbike without being overwhelmed. But wouldnt it be nice to learn on a bike that is more forgiving to your mistakes (mistakes that you WILL make)? As a bonus to that, i'd much rather be able to run out 3 gears and only be doing 25 over on a less powerful bike, than jump on a CBR600RR, let the clutch out and already be doing twice the speed limit.

So my suggested list is this:
ninja 250
ninja 500
gs500e/f (what i ride)

you can buy them on the cheap, ride the piss outta it for a few months and then flip it.

Eh, even though Buells are a lot better than they were, they're still not quite sterling on reliability yet. For a first bike that might not be a great choice. They don't post here but we know a pair of brothers who had Buells fairly recently and were somewhat soured on 'em.

On the flip side though it'd probably be a pretty fun bike and it's air cooled so at least it's somewhat simple. The Firebolt also typically gets high marks for its handling.

I guess it wouldn't be a terrible choice but maybe you should try to find some Buell forums to read up on their common issues.

Yeah my buddy just told me that they have oil leaking problems, especially once you start to put the miles on them. I'm leaning more toward an F3 / F4 now I think, as soon as the cash frees up a little.

F2/F3's are great starter bikes. Should be able to get one in good shape for ~$2500.

Get a supermoto! A DRZ-400SM can be had for about $3500 with about 5k miles. It won't get you into too much trouble, is light, and gets great gas mileage. And if you are so inclined you can learn how to back it in...

That's a little bit... not true Smile Everybody says that Harley mills have leaking problems because they developed a bad rap in the AMF days. But it really isn't the case anymore (the AMF days were 30 years ago, after all). G is right about their reliability not being particularly stellar, but it's not pathetic, either. I've gotten to ride Lightning's on several occasions and really enjoyed them.

As for the sumo - great bike. Love mine. 60+mpg all day long, on one wheel. A little bit uncomfortable for more than around town, so I wouldn't suggest one for an only bike, but definitely a fun toy.

If you want a sportbike, I'd like towards the CBR Fs like you have been.

I saw a picture of one, it kind of looks like a dirtbike? That's not exactly what I'm looking for, or maybe I was looking at the wrong thing?

A supermoto is, at heart, a dirtbike with 17 inch wheels and the same tires that are on any other sportbike. My supermoto wears the same tires that my F4 does, which happen to be the same tires I use on track. Their weight (the DR-Z400SM weighs in at 295 by the factory numbers) means that they handle incredibly well at sub-superslab speeds. Additionally, their body positioning allows the riders to recover from a lot of situations which would land sportbikes on their ass. If the road you're riding doesn't have you carving up curves at 80mph, then you're not going to have to try to leave everything in your wake.

An SM would make an excellent starter bike.

They're also becoming very popular, stylistically (witness Ducati's entrance to the market with the hypermotard). I get more compliments on my DRZ than any other bike I've owned.

All that said, if you don't like, you don't like it.

PS - my supermoto is the most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle. Period. Smile

Also, that's an S, not an SM. The S gets 21F/18R" wheels and knobby tires. It's a dual-sport. The most important difference between the S/SM is the wheel diameter. You won't be able to slap sticky tires on an S without changing wheels (I've got some I'll sell anybody that wants to do it!) Additionally, the S has a bigger carb, which means it's got more, much needed, oomph. SM owners will part with ~$550 if they want the 39mm sized FCR, instead of their BSR36(mm).

Thanks for all the advice again guys! I think I've decided on an F3 or F4 when I get around to buying one, which looks like it won't be for a while since my hand is broken and I'll likely be getting a different car if mine is somehow not totalled. Sad

Is that amount of mileage an issue on this type of bike?
