My mom is too busy to Facebook and my dad can barely check his email and sell stuff on Ebay. My mom did get AIM to keep in touch with Ben but she never logs on.

I told my mom she was too old for it. Then said I am probably too old also. I'm 26. Where is the cutoff?

I am probably far too old (30) to have a valuable opinion about it. It is probably weird for kids but at least parents are taking in interest in what their kids are doing. I mean, if they are using it to meet people and get laid, that's one thing but chances are they're just on there to see what the site is all about.

Lily Goldberg, 17, a junior at Gaithersburg High School in Montgomery County, said having parents on Facebook just seems weird.

"It's like having them walk into my room," she said.

OMG... not in your room! I know being young was all about "doing your own thing" without having parents invade on that but there are a lot worse things to happen in this world. On the flip side, I think parents need to be okay with their kids limiting the amount of their profile they can see.

My Mom just shared her Google calendar with me and my dad has subscribed my YouTube videos although I suspect some would say "social networking" is different somehow. I don't publish anything on the internet than I wouldn't want them, anyone I work with or complete strangers to see so I guess it's not that big of a deal. Most school age kids don't have that sort of filter so I'm guessing that's part of the objection.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I'm going to agree with Deracola on this. I don't put things on the internet that I don't want seen. Sure I'm 26 and I'm a little old for Facebook but never the less, I don't want people seeing my facebook or myspace for that matter and wondering what kind of f'ed up person I am. People need to learn that their parents are the least of their worries considering most employers troll these sites after interviewing potential employees. Rex's mom is our facebook friend and don't get me wrong we debated for a day or so whether or not we would friend her, but in the end we decided to because we dont' really have anything to hide.

Right, I mean, they've just got to meet you for that Wink

But no, really, I concur. Another +1. If you're too young to have your own "acceptable content" filter than I really think it's a -good- idea to have your parents review your online personae. It provides easier eavesdropping? So? How many people think their parents really believe(d) that they were good, innocent little kids? Having that filter there and dealing with some awkward conversations is a heck of a lot better than the laundry list of potentially awful situations one could end up with thanks to poor online content choices.

my mom doesn't know how to operate those new-fangled internet contraptions

i don't think i'd have a problem with anyone older, but i was hesitant to befriend little cousins though on facebook and myspace. if it ever becomes an issue with my aunts/uncles then i'll filter what are on my sites.

pretty much my whole take on it.

i don't have much to worry about though, my mom still uses floppy disks and my dad is about 4 years behind whatever the newest tech happens to be in the computer world.

my parents barely know how to turn on a computer let alone be invited to superpoke!, dog quiz, attend DJ's 21st OMGWTFBBQZ!!!11 birthday party extravaganza, etc.

i'm not sure if i would want my parents to be on there though, not so much for my own profile but i cant gaurantee that my friends profiles are not retarded and i cant always be sure that my friends tag appropriate photos of me or leave appropriate comments. and yes i know there are ways to have it "approve" before posting, but my point is that i just cant gaurantee that my asshole friends arent retarded about stuff.

Yeah, like mike said. They are social networking sites, and parents are generally part of social networks. I mean, you talk to them and associate with them, right?

i guess it depends on your relationship with your parents. i have nothing to hide from mine... they know i get drunk, they know i live with my girlfriend (omg!! sex!!), they know i use foul language, and they know my friends are all the same... they were my age at one point too.

is there really anything that would be awful if your parents saw or heard it?

edit: ok, i thought of something... i would not like my parents to know i've done it IDB. that's just kinda weird. quick! quick! who can be the first to post that tidbit on my profile!? lol.

I think it's kinda weird... I mean, my friend's dad friended me a while back and he and his wife both have their own accounts. I have no problem with parents wanting to stay current and have their own social networks, but those privacy settings are there for a reason.

That's kind of a gimme. What's more relevant is "if you friended them." In that instance, your privacy settings are null.

Yeah I mean as far as privacy and employers... set your profile to be viewed only by friends. A lot of people do that. If parents are using it as a way to micromanage their kids lives, that's kind of pathetic... but if they're using it as a way to stay in touch and stay current that's more acceptable.

I have my settings completely opened up... Shit, I've even got my former CEO, my two current bosses, and my current CEO as friends. If they can't handle who I really am, I don't want to work for them.
