CF Hood and:
#1
Ok, so I'm probably going to be looking at a used VIS CF hood friday during the day. I'm pretty sure it has a few scratches in it. Obviously the condition will determine whether or not I purchase it. But tell me how hot a CF hood with blue hoodpins and possibly some ricer graphics on it would look.

cf hoods reduce minimal weight. you're better off getting a lightweight battery, removing sound deadening, and losing some weight yourself... the only reason i'd see to get one is to attract thieves and for the "cool" look.

Haha. You call 30 lbs minimal weight? And no, this is for looks, not for performance.
I'm going to be leaving to take a peak at it here in a few minutes.

i could see it recuding some weight for german cars, bmw's and vw's though.

i know my mom's z3 hood weighs a ton along with our old '86 vw hood

how much does a usual cf hood weigh? < 10lbs?

if it'll reduce 30lbs then you have a pretty hefty stock hood Smile if so, i stand corrected. for a honda, it reduces minimal weight.

well if you really want to save weight you do all that stuff.
cf hoods do in fact save a good bit of weight. Weight that is hung over the front wheels and placed relatively high, which for your guy's front heavy fwd piles is the best weight to take out.
The misconception is that they are actually carbon fiber. They are actually just a thin layer of cf for looks, layed over fiberglass. So if you can get a fiberglass version for cheaper, it is much better from a cost/performance ratio.

On cars like the WRX, STi, and miata, the stock hood is aluminum. So in that case you would actually be adding weight to the car if you put on a cf hood.

btw, the hood on allison's integra is pretty hefty. i think you guys would be surprised how heavy your steel h0nduh h00dz are.

If you're after weight savings then gut the support structure off of the stock hood, and take out the latch (off the hood and bumper support) and use hood pins.

That will save the most weight, and its free.

the hood on the 240 weighs a buttload. Honda hoods may not weigh much and therefore not need lighter hoods, but many other cars can really benefit from it.

now to save the most weight you install a forged aluminum GayDM oil cap. ricer!

I'm glad I started a discussion about weight saving...but this was put in the appearance section for a reason...I don't really care about shedding lbs just looking sexy while driving fast.

For the record, the hood was a piece of crap that had only been held down by a latch and had come up and hit his windshield. Broken and scratched (dude only told me scratched.)

There are many companies that make both fiberglass and true carbon fiber hoods.

There is no such thing as minimal weight. Every ounce you can remove from the car adds up. But you probably wouldn't purchase a hood that wasn't a lot lighter than stock.

well back to the main discussion:

black car w/ cf hood is nice

subtle while looking good so it won't attract theives from a distance

mmmMMmmm....obviously not a black car, but

i dunno about the blue hood pins though...maybe silver or something, i have to see it though

I think it is a moot point now. I'm much more likely to opt for a wideband right now.
