Oil Choices

asteele2 Wrote:I think his point is "doesn't the Oil take more abuse over the weekend than the filter?"

Not really... In order for oil to "heat up and break down" it has to get really hot - over 300 *F hot. Oil pressure in the engine should be the same as going to work.

If you want to change it, go ahead but you're not hurting anything by leaving it alone. You should get an oil filter wrench (the type that fits on the end of the filter and you turn with a socket wrench) - makes taking the filter off much easier.

Oil changes are one of those things that cracks me up given the whole marketing vs reality thing. Mobil 1 is running a new TV commercial talking about how they did 100,000 miles on one helping of their synthetic oil. Really? Then why the hell are you telling me to change it every 3k? I went 15k on my Civic over a calendar year with no problems. I aim for 5-8k mile intervals with my automobiles that I care about (the Civic wasn't one of them).

Motorcycles are even better. There's a guy on dcsportbikes.net that changes his oil between races. Literally, between 7 lap sprint races. Those things are rarely ever more than 21-22 miles total. He swears by it. Me personally, I change the oil/filter at the beginning of the season and leave it for the year (except for the year I pulled off 10 or 11 track days, I changed it aroudn #5 or #6 but left the same filter in place until winter). And I barely fill mine to the "Low" marking so my crank doesn't slosh in it too much.

That's my mental vomit for this thread.

FWIW, I wouldn't even consider changing the oil or filter Maeng. Oil with only 1500 street miles on it? That's like new. Go directly to track.

Not according to Blackstone, at least in my car with Mobile 1 and a big ass Motocraft High Flow Filter. They saw almost no different in 1,000 track miles and 3,000 highway miles. In fact they thought I sent them brand new oil after almost 1,000 track miles.

well, i got a blackstone analysis on the oil that i changed out 1500mi ago. the previous change had about 3500 miles on it including only one track weekend. the readings came back okay except it had a high lead content. the thrust bearings on 99 and some early 2000 miatas have been known to fail and in fact my car had its engine replaced like 50k miles ago under warranty for that very reason. the blackstone report said to change it for every track weekend but i've usually been doing it by either two track weekends close to each other or one track weekend and one stint of daily driving for a month or two (as i have the past few months which is why i revived this thread).

there is definately noticable symptoms on my car(s) of going too long without a change.

on the racecar, over 2 weekends with mobil 1 in it and it has low oil pressure and lots of lifter tap. (isolated oil as the problem by changing oil between sessions which fixed the problem)
on the street car, oil pressure and engine noise is also different on older oil. i think usually around 5k miles

maeng i would change the oil after the first of the 2 events.

Evan - did you change the oil and filter between sessions, or just oil?

saw you mention mobil 1....not to try to get into a brand wars thing but i've read on BITOG that many of their blends tend to sheer down quickly due to the base composition (can't remember the correct jargon). it's almost a conspiracy theory over on NASIOC with all the EJ engines that have spun bearings with M1 5-30

have you ever used any other brand in it? just curious.

did you just read the cliffs notes and jump to conclusions?

RJs article Wrote:We're as shocked as almost anyone else that at 10,000 miles the oil is still good, the filter is still good, everything really looks just fine in there

they only recommend filter changes every 5k when going 15k miles or more on an oil fill. they didnt change filters until after 10k

Quote:Overall, the filter change seems to have "bought" about 5,000 miles of wear back
which means the most agressive you should ever change your filter is 5k miles. hardly wearing out in no time.

Which is why I said...

I never said it would wear out in no time or they were fragile.

Maeng-On the Mr2, Blackstone said that my oil was still good after 2 track weekends and 2 autoxs. I wouldn't sweat it.

dont ever quote those nasioc clowns ever again Wink Ive never seen such internet sheep! Tongue

but to answer your question, i was a big fan of dino oil before i switched ot mobil 1, but oil pressure level and stability at the end of the race is much better with mobil 1.

to be fair, the behavior i described above i think may be caused by the motor running hot so it may be an extreme case.

Which flavor of Mobil 1 are you using? Do you have an oil temp gauge in that pile?

Red herring. Irrelevant if changing below 10k miles as your own article shows, and none of us change before 10k miles.
Given the context of discussion, a filter does not wear out.

hey hey note the smiley! i know what you mean about that place...

Maeng, i'd probably just change the filter out if it was me. 1500 miles should still have a decent amount of life/additives in it.
