Gravel 1, John 0 (Now with nekkid pictures!)

Ouch.

I was out riding gravel/dirt roads with my father-in-law, on his brand-new XL650R (he was riding an old Yamaha 2-smoke). We had done about 60 miles, and were headed back when I dumped it in a left-hander. Maybe 30 miles an hour, and I just went down slowly on the low side.

Of course, since we were just out on dirt, I wasn't wearing "proper" gear. Yes, I'm an idiot. Just had on jeans, long-sleeve sweatshirt and t-shirt, helmet, gloves, and boots. The sweatshirt got pushed up my arm, so I've got a hamburger forearm full of gravel. My hip is bruised, but the jeans held up and didn't let any rash through. The real surprise were my boots. On the outside of the left boot (opposite the bike), the gravel road burned a hole through the boot material, my sock, and into my ankle. Its not deep, but I was very surprised to have that happen on a gravel road.

So, I'm not sure this counts as a "real" crash, but it does hurt like hell and was on a street-legal bike...

Pics tomorrow, maybe.

I'm in for pics! Glad you're not too busted up, John. What did your dad have to say about grounding out the new bike?
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

Jess' dad had already crashed it a couple of times. He thinks I actually straightened out the bars today Smile

He wants to get little stickers for the side of the bike, representing each person that has crashed it - kind of like counting kills on the side of a fighter plane...

Well, after cleaning off all of the blood and skin, the wounds aren't bad at all. The wreck was Saturday afternoon, these pics are from yesterday evening.

I'm pretty sure you were complaining that your knee was all banged up and sticking to your pants making it difficult to walk. Or maybe I just imaged that, who knows.

What kinda boots were these anyway? Work boots?

Just some no-name work boots. In retrospect, I'm not surprised they failed, just surprised that the gravel caused the type of damage I would've expected from asphalt.

Well I don't think it's that's surprising. I mean gravel can give some but it's also got a lower grit than asphalt so it probably all balances out.
