Clutch question (Split from Goodspeed's car thread)
#1
Goodspeed has a 6-puck unsprung clutch in his new car...

WRXtranceformed Wrote:That clutch is a little overkill for what that car is, but hey at least you know you can grow into it! Wink

Is that so for any streeted car? The Daytona on its hot tune (22psi) should make around or over 300whp. On the low tune I would expect over 250whp. The vendor who I have been dealing with on my car tells me now that the clutch I got from him last year will not hold the setup...but its really the same set up I told him then when he recommended it the first time. Its a Kevlar clutch, he says it will start to break hold at 300ish. So he recommends now his 6-puck clutch with his new higher grip pressure plate (20% stronger then the one I have now he tells me). Any advice from MM?

I mean, look at it this way. The stock clutch on my WRX was gripping 100% at 284hp to all 4 wheels. The stock clutch on my STi was holding no problem at 350+ whp before the new block.

I think your vendor is trying to upsell you on something you don't need. 6 pucks can be a pain in the dick from a daily driveability standpoint, and most are either grip or no grip... there's very little middle ground. Twin disc clutches are a nice alternative because they're a little more streetable. Look at it this way: the clutch in my STi (while being super expensive) was carbon / kevlar and that was holding plenty of torque. I think you should be fine man, don't fix it if it ain't broke. And if it turns out to suck, I'd go for a twin disc if you can find one for your car... you'll thank me when you're driving it around town.

Should I get one of his "20% stronger" pressure plates? It all seems like marketing BS to me. His own freaking website says the Kevlar will hold over 350whp.

I dunno, I think it's bullshit to be honest. I'd see what happens. If it doesn't hold it doesn't hold and you upgrade... but like you said, from what his website says, you should be fine.

yeah..we say this now...but its $320 down the toilet. I just posted about it on turbododge.com. I'm hoping Chris doesn't read it and get pissed (guy who runs turbosunleashed) but I think I have a right to ask the buying public about their experiences with his products. I didn't say anything other than that he recommended the Kevlar then and the 6-puck now, and that is has nothing to do with trusting him or not. I just need to know if it will hold up.

That kevlar clutch should hold just fine.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

if this guy reads it and gets pissed, he's a dipshit. either his intentions or his technical knowledge are wrong.

it sounds like you need to take everything this guy says with a big old chunk of salt. He may just want to get more money out of you.

Worse case scenario is the current clutch starts slipping. Then you buy the better one and put it in, which only takes about 4 hours.

and yeah, puck clutches suck on the street. a 6 puck is probably moderately more streetable than my 4 puck, but I wanted to stab myself in the eye when I had to drive it in traffic a few times.
