WTB: 1989-1992 Toyota Supra Turbo
#1
I thought I'd throw this up there just as a heads up for everyone, if you happen to know someone or see an ad to post up here and let me know.

Why '89-'92?
Different front and rear design, body color trim, '90 up came with standard driver side airbag and upgraded stereo. Ideally a 90-92 car would be perfect.

Preferences...
5 speed
Targa
Gray interior

I'm not too picky about outside cosmetics/color, as its an old car so I'm not expecting showroom quality. I'm also not dead set on a gray interior, but I prefer it to the maroon red and blue interiors. If you find a car with "Shadow Gray" leather interior, that is very rare and would be great.

I'm not looking for a heavily modified car. Preferably stock, to lightly modified. A car with service history/matching VINs is always a plus, no salvage titles, theft recoveries, etc etc.

Also, no blown head gasket cars. I need something I can get in and drive right away. If the head gasket has been replaced that is a plus.

Looking to spend in the region of 5k max. I'll be in the US and thus available to look at cars at the end of August. Thanks for your help!

I plan on posting this up on various Supra specific forums but I'll keep it here for now

Im just curious, but whats the big deal with salvage titles? Just throwing my 2 cents out there, but if the work was done right, i see no problem with salvage titles. 80% of the cars i've owned have been salvage titles. the only real down fall to them is they are alittle hard to resell.

Just saying i wouldn't exclude them from your list, its already going to be hard to find one of these cars. My advice is if you don't know what to look for when checking out a salvage title car then take someone with you who does. You'd be surprised what an insurance will total, and whats completely fixable.

Now something that has or had frame damage then yes i would not buy one of those cars. But just because a car has a salvage title doesn't mean its not a "good" car. My insurace totaled my 97 Prelude because the headlights were broken and the hood was alittle bent. I could have fixed it for under a grand, the car was worth 7, but since the estimate was over 4 grand they totaled it.

Keep your options open. Unless your financing, then yeah you will have to get a clean title car.

I just want to be extra careful and ensure that I won't buy a complete POS...I plan on getting under the car to make sure its not two cars welded together. I just want a car with a clean title and hopefully good history for that extra peace of mind. I'm not looking for something that will need immediate extensive and costly repairs or fixing of any kind.

Sure thats understandable, I guess all i can say is, if you find a car and it looks good and everything checks out, but it has a salvage title don't rule it out just because of that. Insurance companies are stupid and will total anything for the stupidest shit.

Its basic maths... if the cost of the repairs are 75-80% of the value of the car, its 'totaled' and issued a salvage title - there's certainly a reason for it.

For anything that I drive/ride on the street I wouldnt want to deal with a salvage title - insurance can be tricky, and you'll always have a harder time selling it.

I understand the math behind it all, what I dont understand is totaling a perfectly good car with "minor" damage that can be fixed for cheaper then what there estimates say.

I've also been told if the repairs are over 50% of the value of the car then they will total it. Which i think is stupid.. 75-80% like you say would be reasonable but anything over 50% is just dumb. Not only will they have to pay out FULL retail to the insured, they will only make about 20% of that money back through resell of the car at the auction. I can only guess that they are happy with these loses because the customer always pays more for insurance then the insurance will ever pay back in claims to the customer.

But hey, we banked off this for along time, buy the car for cheap at the auction, fix it for a grand or so. Resell it for a 1000 under retail and make a couple grand in your pocket.
finding insurance on salvage title cars has never been a problem for me. only thing i've had "some" trouble with is getting full coverage on salvage cars but most companies will do it if the car is checked out by the insurance company.

I only bring up this Salvage title business because its pretty common to find them in these types of cars. At least in my experience. Maybe less common around these parts i have no clue, but it was fairly common in Texas to run across salvage title cars.

I dont think they necessarily issue salvage titles anymore for fixed stuff like that. My mom hit a deer in her car, it was totalled, she bought it back for 300$ and it has a clean title.

About salvage titles, given my younger age and relative lack of experience, I don't want any more hassles with insurance, and I'm not looking for something to buy, fix, and sell. With the murky history that these cars often have, a salvage title just makes me uneasy. Thanks for the advice though, I'll keep it in mind Smile

Thanks for the links Adam. I have seen that '90 autotrader car earlier in my search, might be worth looking into.

Well...the only thing wrong with the 7M-GTE is the 1JZ-GTE.

The long-stroke 7M definitely has a much lower horsepower limit than the JZ. But that doesn't make it a *bad* motor. If you're on a budget, the 7M is the way to go. 300hp? Turn the boostyscrew.

Haha, no doubt. Though, like you predicted, I think the prices of 1JZ's are going up. Definitely worth looking into for the future. I found a 350rwhp 7M powered MK3 in Tennessee for 4 grand....nah I'd kill myself.
