Brake question (Miata related)
#1
Ok, I just installed hawk Blues on my car to get it ready for a HPDE this weekend. I took it out and it sounded like all four pads where grinding on the rotor a little. I did the appropriate bed-in, grinding stopped and put the car into the garage. I just went back out (1 hour later) and pushed the car and all four brakes are still grinding and the car feels difficult to move. Any suggestions? Or is this just normal for 4 new pads (first time with Hawk blues)

Sounds about right for hawk pads. Good luck w/ them, hope they hold up for you.

Hawk blues are like ~85% iron - they're hell on cold rotors - dont drive on them on the street.

yeah, sounds about right... do the rotors look fairly uniform in color? ie: no uneven pad wear across the rotor?

sounds right to me. Use your brakes absolutely as little as possible on your drive down and take them off as quickly as possible, they'll eat your rotors alive unless both are up to temp. I used the Blues up front in the Supra; pretty good pad, but lots of dust and they squeal at low temp.

Oh yeah, the dust is really corrosive too - I hope you dont care about the wheels that are on the car now, because once the dust gets on its very tough to get off. If it rains, the dust is never coming off.

psssh.... blues were, and still are, a VERY popular pad. Because they work really well.

On a racetrack, when kept in their temp range, and used with disposable rotors and wheels that you dont care what they look like....

Blues are really 'old tech'. Sintered iron stops, but there are much better options out there now. There's a lot of people that still use them because they dont want to try anything else, I guess.

Blues are shit, so are blacks on track. They can't hold up to enough heat for a go-cart much less a full size car.

the blacks are basically the same compound as HP+ from what I understand. And neither they, nor blues are designed for track duty on 3000+ lb cars. HT10, HT14 have much higher temp ranges and are better suited for such a thing.

stopping a miata is probably 10x easier on brakes than stopping a mustang.

yea, they also have like 1/10 of the pad surface.

blues are just fine for miatas. the noise and rotor wear is terrible, but the pads last forever and since rotors are dirt cheap for miatas it comes out cheaper.
planet miata has a combo deal for pads and rotors for $100.

i just dont like the feel or modulation of blues though.

Educate me, what compound makes up the majority of other pads, and why is that compound better?

Sintered Iron is old tech... used to be used on airplane brakes. Up until a few years ago that was as good as it got - the organic material used on most street pads would turn to dust rather quickly on track.

Whats better now? Ceramics, all the brake pad mfr's have gone this route. They have better bite, modulation and rotor friendli-ness along with lower noise and the dust isnt corrosive to paint. The only downside is that when they get hotter than their operationg range, they wear like butter instead of destroying the rotors like Blues.
